The International Academic Alliance (IAA) seeks TESOL-certified instructors to teach Academic English in Chinese high schools and universities. This teaching position within an American university-affiliated English program provides teachers with a growth-oriented opportunity to diversify their teaching portfolios, gain experience in English curriculum, and be mentored by American university faculty to gain professional development.
Job Description
Instructors teach intensive English courses to American college- or graduate school-bound Chinese students within the Academic English Program (AEP), a collaborative program developed between IAA and American universities. This unique, rigorous program offers students the opportunity to experience American college-level coursework, and to receive college course credit transferrable to any accredited American university upon completion of the AEP.
About the Academic English Program (AEP)
The AEP curriculum prepares students to thrive in an American university and classroom, with particular emphasis placed on developing academic English skills and the academic competencies critical to success in English-based, higher education coursework.
The AEP course components and sequence are broadly designed to develop the comprehensive skills students need for total success at university, including:
·English communication skills
·Critical thinking
·Standardized test preparation
·College-level research
·Career planning
Responsibilities
Throu gh becoming involved and taking ownership within the AEP program, instructors will have the opportunity to make a lasting impact on English language curriculum development, teaching international student populations, and cultural exchange and understanding.
·Hourly commitment: Teachers will instruct 20 hours per week and will spend up to an additional 20 hours per week conducting writing labs and holding one-on-one student conferences at their AEP teaching site.
·Work closely with your assigned program university or high school’s AEP teaching cohort (up to 3 AEP teachers) and the Director of Studies on: AEP curricula; course delivery; managing or resolving classroom and student issues; and program development and evaluation.
·Participate in ongoing professional development events as part of the AEP faculty, including: teacher trainings; professional mentorship with the AEP’s American university faculty; curriculum evaluation; and program assessment.
·Provide support for students having difficulty with their coursework and work with students and program director to identify and solve potential problems. Coaches students on goal setting and academic success skills and provides training for developing skills inside and outside of the classroom.
Compensation
§C ompensation commensurate with experience
§Round-trip airfare and medical insurance provided
§Accommodations: Well-appointed private 1-bedroom apartments close to program site for teachers’ personal use provided
§Z Visa sponsorship and assistance with all visa procedures
§Employment Contract Term: 11-month teaching contract with possibility of a $1,000.00 bonus at the end of the contract year based on teaching performance evaluations, along with a contract renewal option based on performance evaluation with additional $1,000.00 bonus upon renewal signing.
§In addition, following the teacher’s annual performance review based on peer, student, and director evaluations and in meeting AEP program standards, teachers would be eligible for incremental salary increases.
Candidate Qualifications
Applicants must be willing to relocate to various major cities throughout China byFebruary 15, 2014, with their teaching assignment extending through January 15, 1015.
Candidates must possess at least a Bachelor’s degree with TESOL certification, or be an experienced ESL educator possessing TESOL certification.
An ability to adapt to a new culture and previous experience teaching or traveling abroad is preferred, but not required.
