Job Description

Certified Teachers (prek to Grade 7) Needed for Academic Program in Mandalay

Certified Teachers (PreK to Grade 7) Needed for Academic Program in Mandalay, Myanmar

Overview:
Mandalay Academy is a new PK-12 academy in Mandalay, Myanmar, scheduled to open in March. We will follow an American curriculum in order to qualify as a fully accredited school based on US accreditation criteria (WASC).

We are looking for two groups of motivated and energetic teachers to teach our very first classes:

1. Three Preschool Teachers for our initial summer program: This position begins in March.

2. Teachers for grades 1 to 7 for our initial elementary and middle grades program: These positions begin in late May.

Both positions are full time (average of 40 hours per week, which includes teaching time, preparation/planning time, and faculty meeting time). Teachers are required to follow an established curriculum in order to meet the academic needs of the students. In addition, teachers are required to attend regular training sessions and/or staff meetings, to participate in curriculum committee meetings/activities, and to participate in school-related functions.

Although we expect our teachers to be fully trained and competent, we do not leave teachers to “sink or swim.” Each teacher will be teamed up with a local assistant teacher for additional support. In addition, teachers will receive on-site trainings and/or workshops in relevant educational issues.

Candidate Qualifications:
* Current teaching certificate
* Fluency in English
* Experience teaching in Asia (preferred) or in another international setting
* Cultural sensitivity and respect for other cultures (mandatory)
* We seek open, caring, humane individuals who have positive outlooks

Compensation and Benefits:
* Starting salary range from US$18,000 to 30,000 (exact amount depends on experience); this range is well above the average salary for the region.
* Summer vacation (two months) for teachers who sign annual contract.
* Travel assistance to/from Myanmar for teachers who sign two-year contract (amount of assistance depends on your point of origin; teachers already in Asia may be eligible for full reimbursement).
* Free housing with basic furnishings (teachers pay bills for utility, water, power, et cetera).
* The school will pay for visas and expenses related to renewing visas.

More on the School and the City:

The school in Mandalay is the first full academy in the region to be based on an American curriculum model. Our school, which begins with PK to grade 7, will eventually grow into a PK to grade 12 college preparatory academy. Our student population will include both Myanmar (Burmese) students and a large number of students who are ethnically Chinese but who reside permanently in Mandalay. English is the language of instruction, and the goal is to have graduates who are proficient in English and who are academically prepared to attend a university in any English-speaking country. Although we have high academic goals, we never want teachers to lose sight of the fact that learning (and school) should be fun for students. Make your lessons academically challenging, but also make them exciting and interesting!

Mandalay is a city of about a million inhabitants. You’ll find modern conveniences in the main town and plenty of rural beauty just outside of the city proper. The pace of life is slow by Western standards: people take time to stop and talk with one another. You will see more people on bikes and scooters than in cars. The local people will smile at you and take time to welcome you to their community.
