Director of Studies


About the Position


The International Academic Alliance (IAA) creates educational pathways for students at our various learning centers. Our Academic English Program (AEP) is designed to prepare students for American university, including English skills and competencies critical to success for English-based coursework. These language intensive courses are offered at our Chinese high schools and colleges. The AEP is an international education collaborative between IAA and the State University of New York.


IAA is currently hiring for anAEP Director of Studiesto provide academic oversight throughout the program’s centers in China, curriculum assessment/evaluation, and professional development training to instructors. The Director of Studies will represent the AEP to students, program faculty, university/school partners, and potential affiliates. This position is resident in China, and requires a high amount of travel.


Responsibilities


§ Develop curriculum for AEP program, including creating general curriculum outlines for internal use and coordinating with teachers on syllabuses for internal/external use; also includes assisting teachers develop assessments.


§ Conduct academic oversight: review teacher lesson plans electronically and troubleshoot problems with instructors as needed.


§ Maintain regular communication with teachers re: teaching practices, site-specific logistics, or other issues that arise.


§ Observe classroom teaching and provide spoken and written feedback to teachers; provide professional development opportunities as needed.


§ Assist with recruitment of teaching staff, including conducting interviews and drafting contract agreements.


§ Coordinate with Center Directors and school staff at partnership programs around curriculum, teaching staff, and general day-to-day functions of the programs.


§ Teach (or substitute teach) courses as needed.


§ Consistent travel to schools to satisfy the above responsibilities.


Qualifications


§ Master's degree in English, Education, TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or similar field highly preferred. Bachelor's degree required.


§ Demonstrated experience in curriculum design.


§ Demonstrated experience in working with language teachers, preferably in a context featuring management, professional development, and academic oversight.


§ Experience teaching in high school or college settings.


§ Willingness to travel for professional purposes.


§ Self-starter, with high degree of flexibility and openness to cultural differences.


§ Mandarin language skills helpful but not required.


Compensation


§ Salary: Commensurate with experience and qualifications


§ Round-trip airfare and medical insurance provided


§ Accommodations: Well-appointed private 1-bedroom apartment close to program administration offices provided


§ Z Visa sponsorship and assistance with all visa procedures


§ This is a 2-year contract term position, and applicants must be willing to relocate to various major cities throughout China by August 15, 2014.
