English Teachers Needed at Local Middle School in the Beautiful Town of Yangshuo
Local middle school in the beautiful town of Yangshuo. The students in the school are 12 to 18 (junior 1-2-3 and senior 1-2-3 in the chinese school system).
Classes are big (~50 students per class), but spacious (teachers can walk around the classroom, unlike some other schools).
The general level of English is very low. It does not improve with the age of the students, it depends much more on the students' own motivation and attitude it seems.
The middle school attracts the students from the region, almost all of them being sons and daughters of farmers.
Learning English might enable them to get a job in Yangshuo's huge tourist economy (growing every year, with more and more Chinese and Western tourists coming through).
Foreign teachers (sometimes 5, sometimes only 2) teach from about 15 to maximum 20 hours a week (changes each term). Foreign teachers teach Oral English Class. There are no examinations, which gives these classes (and the teachers) a lot of freedom in the lesson planning. Songs, movies, games... even teaching other languages (using English as a basis for explanations).
The workload for the students is quite big, which means students are sometimes tired (from making homework during long evenings) or distracted (since this is a little like a free hour for some). Students do appreciate their foreign teachers a lot, being fond of cultural exchanges, international gossip, questions about money and relationships in other countries, etc.
Full-time teachers receive free accommodation on the school grounds, with a beautiful view of the rural landscape spreading out around the school.
4000 Yuan is the monthly salary, with half-pay during the 2 months of summer holiday and the 1 month Spring festival holiday.
4000 Yuan is a very good salary in Yangshuo, and is certainly enough for the teachers to save money or travel around the region extensively.
The foreign teachers can join the Chinese teachers or their students in either of two cantines, where food is served for all meals at very cheap prices.
The school has many basketball fields, an athletics running field and possibility for badminton and volleybal and pingpong. (Main outside activities for many students).
The school is looking for full-time foreign teachers with a good level of English (need not be native speaker), staying at least one term (september to january, or february to june). Help will be provided for getting a 1-year residence/work permit (if teachers stay for at least a year).
