About Quzhou
Quzhou is a prefecture-level city in western Zhejiang province, China. Sitting on the upper course of the Qiantang River, it borders Nanping to the south, Shangrao and Jingdezhen to the west, Yellow Mountain of Anhui Province to the north, and Hangzhou, Jinhua and Lishui to the east. The prefecture-level city of Quzhou currently administers three counties, namely Longyou, Kaihua and Changshan Counties, two districts, namely Kecheng and Qujiang Districts, and one county-level city, namely Jiangshan City. It covers an area of 8,844.6 Square Kilometers, and has a population of 2.52 million.
Quzhou enjoys a long history of over 1800 years and has been listed as a famous state-level historical and cultural city. The foundation of Quzhou can be dated back to East Han Dynasty, year 192 A.D., when it was named Xin’an and of county-level. In year 559A.D. Xin’an was enlarged into a shire, which marked the beginning of the leading-county system. In year 621 A.D, Quzhou city was established. After the Liberation of China in 1949, Quzhou Commission was founded but was dismissed in 1955 and the subordinating counties were allocated into Jinhua or Jiande special administrative areas respectively. Until 1985 was the prefecture-level city of Quzhou was founded.
Quzhou is well endowed with a splendid culture and boasts abundant scenic spots and historical relics. The Ancestral Temple of the Southern Confucian Clan was built in Quzhou as early as in year 1128 when Kong Duanyou, the 48th generation descendent of Confucius, followed the Emperor of the Song Dynasty to the south and thereby was conferred land and mansion here. The temple here, styled the one in Qufu city, Shandong province, is one of the only two Confucius Family Temples and has long been known as the “Southern Shrine”. The well-preserved city walls and traditional streets give Quzhou the most historic profoundness among the eleven municipal cities in Zhejiang Province. The Lanke Mountain is considered the cradle for the Go Culture of China.
Located by the source of the Qiantang River, Quzhou is characterized by picturesque landscapes and abundant resources, which have won Quzhou the title of National Eco-Model city, National Garden City, and Excellent National Tourism City. Since its establishment, Quzhou has been the trading center and transport hub of the four neighboring provinces, namely Zhejiang province, Fujian province, Jiangxi province, and Anhui province. The transportation networks by land, water and air have been fully established. The Zhengjiang to Jiangxi railway runs through the whole city, and the Quzhou to Changshan railway has been in utilization, which is a part of the Jiujiang-Jinggdezhen-Quzhou railway that is designed to join Beijing-Jiulong Railway.
As a major project, the Quzhou passage of the whole Hangzhou-Changsha passenger dedicated line has been officially commenced, which marked an era of high-speed rail for Quzhou. The Shipping Project on Qujiang River, presently under construction, will redepict a scene of thousands of ships sailing, and rebring a glorious golden waterway. Hangzhou- Jinhua- Quzhou highway, Hangzhou- Xin’anjiang- Jingdezhen highway, Huangshan-Quzhou-Nanping highway, and Longyou-Lishui highway constitute a highway network that connects the places of four directions. During the Twelfth Five-Year Plan period and the time after, under the requirements of green development, ecology-friendly enrichment, and scientific breakthrough, the prefecture of Quzhou will develop sustainably by leaps and bounds from a high starting point.
