ESL Teacher at Gate Education, Weihai China

Located in Weihai, one of China’s cleanest and most liveable cities, we are a small school that believes good relationships with our staff make the school better for all, especially our students.

The Job

We are looking for a fulltime ESL teacher to start in or around May on a one year contract. It would be a maximum 24 teaching hours a week and we do not enforce crazy office hours, just a few hours of lesson planning as well as meetings and training mean you would rarely work much more than 30-35 hours a week. Like all ESL private training schools, the classes would mostly be on weekends with days off either Monday & Tuesday or Thursday & Friday.

The Teacher

We of course prefer native English speakers, but would consider non-native speakers only if they have near native pronunciation and English skills. While teaching experience is preferred, we would also hire someone who has recently completed their TEFL, TESOL or CELTA course so long as they show a professional and positive attitude. I am not of the belief that 10 years of teaching experience guarantees quality.

The City

Weihai is located on a peninsula on the North East tip of Shandong province, pointing towards South Korea, meaning has many beautiful beaches and coastal roads for walking or cycling. There are many small mountains for day trips and a wonderful environment that is paradise compared to Beijing and other large Chinese cities. The lifestyle here is relaxed and peaceful and I would only recommend coming here to people who enjoy an active life. I play several different sports throughout the year and spend a good 4-5 months swimming in the sea. Some brave locals swim all year round.

The Package

7500RMB a month, plus airfare, shared accommodation and visa. While it might seem low compared to other cities, remember in Beijing or Shanghai you might be paying 3-5K a month in rent and spending twice as much. 7500 in Weihai is the equivalent of 12-14 thousand in a larger city. You should be able to save at least half your salary every month.
