The Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School seeks qualified candidates to fill the position of ESOL Teacher/Liaison to Israeli Families for grades 7-12, a full or part-time position for the 2014-2015 academic year.


Responsibilities include:

  • Administer the WIDA Model assessment of English language skills and evaluate the needs of each potential ESOL student.
  • Devise curriculum for and teach ESOL classes to middle school and high school students.
  • Provide academic guidance and coaching to ESOL students through a dedicated ESOL study hall.
  • Provide academic support to ESOL students in content area courses such as history and science.
  • Work closely with the teachers of all ESOL students to make recommendations for academic accommodations and monitor progress.
  • Work with guidance counselors, learning specialists, teachers, coaches, and other School staff members to promote the overall wellbeing of Israeli students in the School.
  • Serve as advisor for Israeli students and oversee their academic and social integration into the School.
  • Serve as primary liaison between the School and Israeli families, helping these families become acclimated to School life, integrate into the School community, and navigate the School calendar and procedures.
  • Identify and promote opportunities for members of Israeli families to take active roles in School events and initiatives.


The ideal candidate will:

  • Be experienced in and knowledgeable about effective second language teaching methodologies.
  • Have experience in collaborating with teachers of other core subjects to be able to support students in their learning of course content other than English.
  • Have outstanding communication skills and a reputation for establishing a positive rapport with students and parents.


Position requires a Bachelor’s degree in English, Language Arts, ESOL or a related field, and a minimum of two years of successful teaching experience in a public or independent school. ESOL/TESOL certification or endorsement preferred. Familiarity with Hebrew language and/or Israeli culture preferred.
