(LOCATION) DAEGU

GodamDaegu (Korean: [tɛɡu]), (´ë±¸, ÓÞÏÈ, literally 'large hill') formerly spelled Taegu,[1] and officially known as the Daegu Metropolitan City, is a city in South Korea, the fourth largest after Seoul, Busan, and Incheon, and the third largest metropolitan area in the nation [2] with over 2.5 million residents. The city is the capital and principal city of the surrounding Gyeongsangbuk-do province, although it is not legally part of the province. The two areas combined are often referred to as Daegu-Gyeongbuk, with a total population of over 5 million.

Daegu is located in south-eastern Korea about 80 km from the seacoast, near the Geumho River and its mainstream, Nakdong River in Gyeongsang-do. The Daegu basin, where the city lies, is the central plain of the Yeongnam region, making the city the natural center of the region's politics, economy, and culture.

In ancient times, there was a proto-country named Jinhan, to which the current Daegu area belonged. Later Daegu was part of the Silla Kingdom which unified the Korean Peninsula. During the Joseon Dynasty period, the city was the capital of Gyeongsang-do which was one of traditional eight provinces of the country. Daegu was an economic motor of Korea during the 1960s–1980s period. The humid subtropical climate of Daegu is ideal for producing high quality apples, thus the nickname, "Apple City".[3] Daeju is also known as "Textile City".[4] Textile used to be the pillar industry of the city. With the establishment of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Free Economic Zone, Daegu is currently focusing on folstering fashion and high-tech industries.

Daegu is the host city of the 2011 World Championships in Athletics and the 2003 Summer Universiade.[5] It also hosted three matches in the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

(OTHER LOCATIONS)

Taean (Taean-gun) in South Chungcheong Do, South Korea.

Taean County is most famous for Taean Haean National Park, known for its clear seas, unpolluted soils, coastal flora, tidal flats, coasts, and white sand. It includes thirty different beaches; one of these, Mallipo Beach, is considered one of the three most beautiful in Korea and is over three kilometers long. This beach is also the site of the 2007 Korea oil spill.

The Korean government designated Taean Haean National Park in 1978. It consists of 326.57 km©÷ of land. There are about 130 islands in the park, and 250 species of flora thrive there.

Chollipo Arboretum in Sowon-myeon, founded in 1979 by naturalized US-expatriate Min Byung Gal (Carl Ferris Miller), is a 64ha (158 acre) private botanical garden housing more than 7000 different species of plants collected from more than 60 countries.

The Sinduri beach in Taean is home to the Duung wetland, a sand dune wetland and protected area that is also designated a National Treasure of South Korea.

The Korean boy band Big Bang based their song, "Sunset Glow", in honor of the park. The title track from their 2nd full-length Korean album, Sunset Glow, a remake of Lee Moon Sae's Red Sunset. Their Music Video for Sunset Glow is spreading the message to visit Tae-an beaches again after the 2007 Korea oil spill where it had previously struck the once populated tourist attraction a year ago, leaving it deserted and neglected.
