Job Description

Small City Charm, Big City Benefits at Web International English Changzhou!

Small City Charm, Big City Benefits at Web International English Changzhou! 11-13,000 RMB + Housing + Airfare Reimbursement and More!

Hello! My name is Max Patterson, and on behalf of Web International English in Changzhou, I’d like to invite you to join our growing team of international teachers. Established in 1998, Web is a private language academy with centers around China, focusing on young adult (12+) and adult learners across a range of English levels ranging from Icebreaker (Basic) up to Advanced (Near Fluency). Teaching is based on the DynEd courseware system, which means students are taught via a combination of computer-based lessons and foreign teacher led classes. With over a decade of ESL teaching experience, Changzhou Web prides itself on offering its teachers a superior experience and more competitive compensation package compared to many of the smaller, less structured private schools across China. Currently we have 4 centers based in Changzhou, Jiangsu (about an hour from Shanghai by rail) and are looking to fill positions in all of them. I myself have been a teacher at Changzhou Web for close to 3 years now, and I and the other members of the team hope you’ll give our little city a chance! New and experienced teachers are welcome, job details are posted below as well as some additional information about our centers and city.

Required Qualifications:

1. Applicants must be a native speaker from one of the following countries: Australia, Canada, Ireland New Zealand, South Africa, the UK or the USA. Unfortunately this excludes a lot of excellent teachers, but as Web does not allow teaching without a proper work visa we are limited by Chinese regulations.

2. Bachelor's degree (any major) and a TEFL or TESOL certificate (Trinity, Celta etc.).

3. Two years of previous work experience.

Job Requirements:

1. Teaching 1 hour lessons based on the DynEd courseware system, in classes ranging in size from 4 (Private) to 10 (Salon) students at one of our Changzhou centers.

2. Developing original English corners and one-on-one VIP lessons

3. Responsibilities during office hours include conducting English level placement tests, answering student questions, preparing lesson materials and attending monthly teacher meetings. However, office responsibilities are usually light leaving time for teachers to pursue independent development or activities of their own choosing.

Working hours:

35 hours per week; 25 teaching hours and 10 office hours (including a one hour meal break each shift, 2 for 10-7 shifts). Shifts will run from either 10-7, 10-5 or 1-9, and will not exceed 35 hours total. Teachers will not be asked to work split-shifts, and will be given two consecutive days off per week.

Pay and Benefits:

1. A base salary of 11000-13000 RMB upon completion of a 1-2 month probation period (pay during probation period will be 1000 RMB less than the standard salary). Both probation length and salary are dependent on experience.

2. A monthly housing stipend of 1500-1750 RMB again dependent on experience.

3. Quarterly and Annual Performance Bonuses

4. Airfare reimbursement of 6000 RMB upon completion of a 12 month contract.

5. 10 days paid leave + 15 paid Chinese public holidays.

6. Paid and sponsored Z visa plus Foreign Expert Certificate (FEC)

7. 7 nights paid hotel accommodation upon arrival, and housing placement assistance.

8. Paid medical insurance.

For applications (please include attached résumé/CV) or general questions, please contact me directly at maxwell.patterson@webi.com.cn.

So why choose Changzhou Web?

1. A Competitive Compensation Package
Given the wide array of teaching options available not in just in China but around the world, Changzhou Web has strived to put together a compensation package that doesn’t just offer a competitive salary compared to other ESL training centers, but that also offers our teachers greater freedom and flexibility with less working hours and a larger number of vacation days.

2. A Fair Deal
Any ESL teacher with a horror story (or three) can tell you that not every teaching job in China is created equal (http://www.eslfocus.com/articles/teaching_efl_overseas_job_scams_to_avoid- 493.html), which is why my school decided to forgo the typical recruiter based process and post this advertisement directly. Our school does not engage in practices such as split-shifts, unpaid overtime, mandatory work at multiple centers etc., and I or any of my fellow teachers would be happy to answer any questions you may have. Changzhou Web also takes care to ensure that all benefits and responsibilities of our teaching positions are clearly detailed in the teacher contract. Losing a teacher due to poor communication is a waste of time and money for everyone involved, so we want to make sure that our teachers join our team prepared and enjoy their time working here.

3. An Experienced Group of Teachers
Of the 12 full-time teachers currently employed across our 4 centers, 8 are on at least their second year-long contract, with several of our more experienced teachers having worked 4-5 years at the same center. As mentioned before I'd be happy to put you in touch with one (or more!) of these teachers so you can get a better idea of what the job entails and get a feel for day to day life in Changzhou.

4. A Flexible Learning Environment
While Web does offer a standardized curriculum for most of its classes (something I found very helpful my first year), all teachers are encouraged to adapt and enhance the material to fit their particular teaching strengths. The varied backgrounds and experiences of our teachers are a big part of what makes Web a good place to learn, so we encourage our teachers to bring their own style into the classroom.

5. A Low Cost of Living.
Though hardly a small city by Western standards, Changzhou offers an extremely affordable cost of living while still offering a great deal of Western comforts. In other words, yes we've got McDonald's! Food, rent and public transport in particular are much cheaper than in bigger metropolitan areas like Beijing and Shenzhen. Check out this site for a general idea of living expenses (https://www.expatistan.com/cost-of-living/changzhou). On the other hand, if you prefer the bright lights, big city experience, Shanghai is only about an hour away by train, convenient for a quick shopping trip or a holiday flight.

Once again, for any questions please contact me directly at maxwell.patterson@webi.com.cn.
