Teaching Opportunities in China!

We are a well-established joint Taiwanese/Chinese company, in operation since 1965, that is creating a new academic program for a project in collaboration with the Chinese government. The program will begin in September in the Beijing area (we will need you there at the end of August), and will expand greatly over the next few years. We are looking for a core group of teachers to initiate it, who have experience in English language teaching, but who, beyond this, also have a broader intellectual background. We want this because we have designed the program as an approach to English through intense concentration on other subjects, and so we need teachers who are knowledgeable and who are comfortable in spreading that knowledge in a classroom environment. The original target group of students will be between 15-22 years old.

You will not be saddled with a textbook, which is an outmoded form of teaching in this Internet age. Whilst we have a wealth of materials that are available for you to use in the classroom, and that we have tested in classrooms in China, we also want you to feel free to bring your own materials into the classroom, as long as these meet certain standards which shall be made clear to you. We provide a certain amount of guidance, but this will only very marginally impact on the degree of freedom that you will enjoy.

Since our teachers will have this large degree of freedom, our program can only work if they have a seriousness of purpose, and the requisite background for carrying it through. We are not looking for teachers who are hoping to gain a little pocket money in the course of their travels, but rather for those of high quality who will at least consider a more serious career move as we expand the program in the coming few years. This is the principal reason we are offering better initial conditions than are most schools, and why also we are prepared to translate these initial conditions into highly desirable ones for those who will stay with the program.

The academic program will be led by an American professor, who will interview you extensively, if you appear to be a sympathetic candidate. Should there be some doubt as to your compatibility with our designs, we may ask for a short demo tape of your teaching. We are looking for those who want to join a program like ours, and who may have had ideas for teaching similar to ours, but have not yet found a good academic environment in which to realize these ideas.

We offer:

15,000 RMB p/m (those with the better skills and background will receive more). Additional hours if you want, plus performance bonus.

Above are listed the basics. This will be a very close-knit program, and we will be making sure that your needs are met during your stay, from your arrival at the airport to your departure.

On your side:

Two years experience teaching ESL or other subjects to foreigners.

Teaching certificate of some kind, bachelor's at least; master's preferred, whether in English or related field. We will consider those with master's degrees from other fields as well, as long as they have some background in teaching second-language students.
