Volunteer Teachers Needed in the Largest Refugee Camp on the Thai-burma Border
A post-grade 10 school operating in the largest refugee camp on the Thai-Burma border is seeking volunteer teachers. The school provides English instruction, computer classes, and social studies classes to young people living in the camp who have completed high school and are working toward either employment or university. The school works hand-in-hand with students, teachers, parents, and community leaders. Students are between 16 and 22 years old and the majority have basic proficiency in English.
We are currently in need of full time volunteers who are able to teach throughout the academic year until 28th March, 2014. Each volunteer assignment is for a minimum period of one month, but we prefer volunteers that can stay for at least three months. This puts volunteers in a better position to become familiar with the school and to help students to progress with their coursework. Teaching experience is not mandatory, but volunteers must have a willingness to work with the local staff to teach students from the established curriculum. The school is about an hour away from Mae Sot, Thailand and public transportation is available for those wishing to travel from the camp to Mae Sot evenings or weekends.
This is a self-funded position so applicants must arrange their own airfare and visa. However, the school will provide volunteers with food and accommodation as well as logistical support for the length of their stay. This is a great opportunity to help a charming group of young adults who are very motivated to learn and eager to improve their English.
