Saint Kitts (also/previously known as Saint Christopher island) is an island in the Caribbean. Together with the island of Nevis it constitutes the nation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. The island is situated at 17°15′N, 62°40′W, about 1,300 miles (2,100 km) southeast of Miami, Florida, in the United States. It has a land area of about 68 sq. miles (168 kmē), being 18 by 5 miles (29 by 8 km).
It has a population of around 35,000, the majority of whom are of African descent. The main language is English, although there is also a lingering French presence, and the literacy rate is approximately 98%. Residents call themselves Kittitians.
