Baoshan Teachers College

Baoshan Teachers’ College, established in 1978, is one of the earliest four teachers’ colleges set up in Yunnan Province with the approval of the State of Council of the People’s Republic of China. After nearly 30 years of construction and development, the college has been a full-time institution of higher learning which gives top priority to normal education, supplemented by adult education and vocational education.
Baoshan Teachers’ College is situated in Long Yang District, Baoshan Municipality, Yunnan Province. Baoshan, bordered on the north of Burma, is only seven hundred kilometers away from the northeastern India. Baoshan, with a superb natural environment and with an old tradition of history and culture, has been the centre of politics, economy, culture and education in the west of Yunnan Province. Baoshan holds an important position on the “South Silk Road” in ancient China, which is the international land road leading to South Asia. Baoshan Teachers’ College again lies in the center of the areas where live many ethnic minorities respectively from Dehong, Nujiang, Lincang, Dali, Lijiang and Diqing. The college always takes on an important task of training and preparing graduates for frontier ethnic minorities areas in Yunnan Province. It is an important base of producing graduates in the southwestern frontier of our country, which can easily feed many qualified graduates into these ethnic minoritries areas. Baoshan’s special geographical position, long history and profoundly cultural connotations have a good foundation for the development of higher education in Baoshan.
At present, Baoshan Teachers’ College covers an area of about 800 mu, with its built-up area of 150,000 square meters. And in our college, there are 20 million yuan’s worth of teaching instrument and equipment, 420,000 books, 17 multimedia classrooms and 9 phonetics laboratories with 2,051 seats and 405 seats respectively, over 600 computers, 29 practice teaching bases, and 19 practice bases for vocational students. The college has also 400 teachers and staff and workers, including 282 full-time teachers, 11 professors, 82 associate professors and 90 doctors and masters.
Now Baoshan Teachers’ College has 11 departments such as Chinese, Mathematics, English, Physics, Biochemistry, Politics & History, Computer Science, Education, Music, Arts and Physical Education. Among these eleven departments are 33 specialities (including 15 non-normal education specialities). In 2006, the college cooperated with Yunnan University together to open two undergraduate classes in “Chinese Language & Literatures” and “Computer Science”. At present, the college has 4,480 full-time students while recruiting students from 17 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions such as Yunnan, Sichuan, Chongqing, Guizhou, Jiangxi, Henan, Hunan, Hubei, Xinjiang, and Liaoning. When receiving foreign students from Europe, the United States and neighboring countries, the college has also set up correspondence undergraduate education involving Chinese, Mathematics, English, Physics and Politics. In the past 30 years, the college has produced 15,000 qualified graduates for the society.
With the college’s top priority given to teaching and scientific research, all teachers have issued 2,000 research papers in a variety of publications both at home and abroad, published over 30 monographs, edited and co-edited over 60 teaching materials, and won over 50 awards and provincial- and municipal-grade scientific research projects. The college has appointed 17 professors, and invited some well-known experts and scholars to give lectures in an effort to create a strongly academic atmosphere for all teachers. Each year, foreign teachers, from Britain, the United States, Canada, Australia and Sweden, are invited to do the work of foreign language teaching in our college. At the same time, many teachers in our college are sent to Singapore, New Zealand and Burma for the educational and teaching exchanges. The college has successively established many institutes and organizations such as the Biology Engineering Laboratory, the Construction and Development Research Office, the Yongchang Culture Research Institute, the Psychology Education Research Institute, the Elementary Education Research Institute, the Ailao Culture Seminar, the Western Yunnan’s Seminar for the War of Resistance against Japan, the Southwestern Ethnic Minorities Research Workstation, and the Common Spoken Chinese Test Station. Among these institutes and organizations is the Biology Engineering Laboratory rated as an important laboratory of Baoshan Municipality. The college has founded the Journal of Baoshan Teachers’ College, which is geared to the readership nationwide and overseas. Adhering to the principle of the rigorous scholarship and the good school spirit, the college won many national-, provincial-, and municipal-grade commendations and awards in terms of internal management, teaching management, logistics management, and improving the standard of running schools comprehensively.
With the great support and concern of governments at all levels and people from all walks of life, the college at present is increasing the pace of construction and development. Seizing the chance of the development of West China, the constructing of the Southern Asia-Southeastern Asia international land road, and the building of the center of borderland education in western Yunnan, the college makes great efforts to improve the quality of teaching in order to meet the needs of social and economic development for graduates of high quality in this area. At the same time, on the basis of expanding the scope of campus, raising the professional level of teachers, the college strives to turn itself into a undergraduate university in 2008, which gives top priority to the undergraduate normal education, supplemented by adult education of various kinds and application-oriented education in order to service the western Yunnan and the whole province, and then radiate to South Asia and Southeast Asia.
