The British Institute Bogor

Company Description

The British Institute Bogor

TBI was registered as an Educational Foundation on February 18, 1984. The first branch opened in Bandung in that year and quickly established a reputation for providing high quality English language classes for the general public, delivered by well qualified and experienced native speaker teachers, and supplemented by excellent materials and facilities.

The next branch of TBI was opened in Jakarta in 1990 in the Setiabudi building on Jl. HR. Rasuna Said. As well as providing classes for the public, this branch has also successfully catered to the needs of a wide variety of private sector clients, government departments and non-government organizations, both in Jakarta and in locations outside Java.

In 1995, TBI was purchased by a consortium consisting of the University of New South Wales (UNSW), and a local partner, Bangbayang 66. An agreement was signed to carry out educational activities in Indonesia and the resulting entity was Lembaga Pendidikan UniSadhuGuna (USG). USG is incorporated under Indonesia law, with a Board of Directors comprising members of the Yayasan and representatives from UNSW.

In 1995 TBI Jakarta established itself as the first centre in Indonesia offering the University of Cambridge 'Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language to Adults' (CTEFLA) with help from Benita Cruikshank from International House, London. This course has since evolved into the 'Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults' (CELTA), which TBI runs several times a year, and TBI continues to be the only language school in Indonesia providing this course.

The next branch of TBI was established in 1999 in Jl. Dipati Ukur, Bandung, in partnership with Yayasan Ekonomika. Like the Setiabudi branch, this school has also provided both public and closed group classes.

TBI's first exclusively non-native speaker branch opened in July 2001 in the Widjojo Centre on Jl. Sudirman, Jakarta. This branch offers both public and closed group courses using non-native speaker teachers that are trained and supported by TBI's teacher training team. Since 2004 TBI Sudirman has also provided intra-curricular English language training to students from the Indonesian Banking School.

TBI's second joint venture, with Malang College of Economics, began in 2001. As with TBI's other joint venture in Bandung, the school was established with the intention of providing courses for the college, as well as providing TBI's own range of courses for public and closed groups.

TBI's first franchise branch was opened in Bogor in 2004. The following year new franchise branches were opened in Medan, Kelapa Gading (Jakarta), and Cengkareng (Jakarta). These were followed by Surabaya in 2006 and the most recent addition to TBI, our Pasir Kaliki, Bandung branch, which opened in January 2007.
