Job Description

Teach English in Japan as an ALT with the JET Program

Teach English in Japan as an ALT with the JET Program. Applications open in October 2013 and start dates will be July/August 2014.

Japan Exchange and Teaching Program:

The Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET) is Japan's oldest and most reputable program that brings young professionals from 41 countries around the world to work full-time in Japan, primarily as language instructors. With JET, you can gain work experience abroad and explore a rich and historical culture, while receiving excellent benefits -- including a comfortable salary, pre-departure training, round-trip airfare to Japan, health insurance, and more. The available positions, which will begin in July/August 2014, are for Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs) and Coordinators for International Relations (CIRs).

Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs):

ALTs are engaged primarily in English language instruction and are placed mainly with local boards of education or public elementary, junior high, and senior high schools throughout Japan. When working as an ALT, participants "team-teach" in pairs with a Japanese instructor of the English language. Japanese proficiency is not required, though it is beneficial to your application. Teaching certification is not required.

ALTs have the opportunity to get involved in extracurricular activities such as sports, music, art, and English clubs. Many ALTs are also active in the local community, participating in traditional Japanese arts clubs, taking Japanese language classes, teaching adult English conversation, etc.

Coordinators for International Relations (CIRs)

CIRs are placed in local government offices, and are engaged in internationalization activities such as translation, interpretation, planning events, hosting foreign delegations, etc. Many CIRs also teach English at the elementary school level. To qualify for the CIR position, you MUST have semi-advanced or advanced Japanese ability. CIRs have the opportunity to get involved in the local community, participating in traditional Japanese arts clubs, taking Japanese language classes, teaching adult English conversation, etc.

All majors are welcome to apply! A genuine interest in teaching and working with students, as well as an interest in learning about Japan is a must. US citizenship is required and you must earn your bachelor's degree by July 1, 2014, in order to be eligible for this year's program.

Our application typically becomes available in mid/late-October. The deadline for submission of materials is Tuesday, December 3rd, 2013.
