English as a Foreign Language Teacher (Jan 6.-June 30, 2014) Volunteer Position- Room and Board Provided - Costa Rica

Located on the beautiful Sarapiquí River, the SCLC depends on long-term volunteers to run its day-to-day programs and operations. The volunteers must be highly committed, self motivated, willing to work full-time, and responsible for coordinating the entirety of the EFL program. The SCLC is focusing on realizing its original mission of establishing itself as a center for resources for the Sarapiqui community and a place where the community comes to support and help each other. Due to the nature of the Center and the mission to reach and work with the local community, all volunteers should have an intermediate level of Spanish and feel comfortable communicating in this language.

The volunteer who commits to coordinate the program and participate in the day to day operations of the Center, for a minimum of six months, will be provided with a private room in a local family's home, all meals, laundry service plus a bicycle.

The EFL Program was originally developed to satisfy the demand of the community to be able to compete in the current job market. Costa Ricans in the rural communities of Sarapiquí have the opportunity to learn English in a comfortable learning environment with native teachers and developed materials.

Please note that teaching is only a part of this position; this is a Community Development and Outreach Center in which it is absolutely necessary for volunteers to participate in all of the Center‚s projects and missions.

Job Description Promote & Advertise EFL course and its registration period throughout the local area. Manage and coordinate all aspects of registration process, including conducting entrance exams to determine appropriate levels for registrants. Keep track of tuition payments and follow-up with students who fall behind in payment schedule Teach multiple levels of English classes to adults and youth, in the evening because of demand. Assist in the EFL for kids program development, at the moment in pilot phase Participate in community outreach and development. Participate in maintenance and upkeep of Center. Assist with administration needs including rotating reception duty Assist in weekly chores which include cooking lunch and all cleaning and maintenance needs of the Center Write monthly article for one of the following: newsletter, website, blog or facebook Write monthly report about program outcomes and challenges Coordinate with the EFL coordinator from the National University to standardize courses.

Job Requirements

Native English Speaker Intermediate level of Spanish TEFL, TESOL or CELTA certification A strong passion for working in community outreach and development, and conservation Experience teaching EFL/ESL Experience creating lesson plans Experience teaching adults and children Experience with classroom management Motivation and self-starting initiative Willing to sign contract detailing responsibilities and commitments, with $100 refundable deposit to adhere to these commitments Willing to work evenings Mon. through Thur. 5:00 ˆ 8:00pm (youth and adults), and Saturdays 9am-12pm (EFL for Kids)
