Trainers of English and Teacher Mentors

The British Council in Malaysia has two exciting projects that offer a unique opportunity to utilise teacher training and mentoring skill sets while making a real difference to thousands of school teachers and millions of children.

The Malaysian government has set ambitious targets to develop the pedagogical skills and English language capacity of their teachers in order to improve the teaching and learning of English and has asked the British Council to use its significant experience in this sector to help meet these targets. Our projects have been running since 2011 and thanks to their outstanding success, we are delighted to have the opportunity to extend their duration in to 2014 and beyond.

For experienced Primary sector and ESL teachers with significant Young Learner teaching and mentoring experience looking to develop their experience of mentoring skills we offer the chance to work on our unique English Language Teacher Development Project (ELTDP) on the island of Borneo in East Malaysia which aims to provide Malaysian primary teachers with professional support in order to improve the teaching of English in Malaysia.

For highly experienced EFL teachers or state school teachers with a TEFL qualification, with five or more years teaching/training experience we can offer the opportunity to join the Malaysia-wide Professional development of English Language Teachers (Pro-ELT) project. This project aims to strengthen English teaching and learning through language proficiency training of Malaysian English language teachers.

For both projects you will need to be independent, flexible, resilient and self-motivated. Many postings will be in remote, rural locations and while we provide an extensive professional and pastoral support network applicants should be comfortable with often being the sole trainer or mentor in the communities they work in. You will need a minimum of an internationally recognised TEFL qualification (Cambridge CELTA/Trinity CertTESOL/PGCE TESOL) and an undergraduate/university degree. You will also have significant post certificate teaching experience. The amount and type of experience required will vary between roles. In addition you must be a highly proficient speaker of English.
