Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs): All Areas: Japan


The Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET) is Japan's largest and most reputable program that brings young professionals from 41 countries around the world to work full-time in Japan, primarily as language instructors. Contracts are for a one-year period, which can be renewed for a total of up to five years at the discretion of the contracting organization in Japan. The available positions, which will begin in July or August 2014, are for Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs) and Coordinators for International Relations (CIRs).

ALT (Assistant Language Teacher): ALTs from the U.S. are engaged in English language instruction. ALTs are placed mainly with local boards of education or public elementary, junior high, and senior high schools throughout Japan. When working as an ALT, participants “team-teach” in pairs with a Japanese instructor of the English language.

CIR (Coordinator for International Relations): These participants are engaged in internationalization activities, such as planning events, translation, interpretation, hosting foreign delegations, etc... CIRs are placed in offices of local authorities or related organizations.

Note: You must have advanced Japanese ability to qualify for this position.

Salary: 3.36 million yen in the first year, 3.6 million yen in the second year, 3.9 million yen in the third year, 3.96 million yen in the fourth and fifth years.

Other benefits: Airfare provided to and from Japan, enrollment in the national health insurance, no work on Japanese national holidays, at least ten days of paid leave, assistance in securing housing arrangements, and the experience of a lifetime!

Qualifications: All applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree in order to be eligible. All majors are welcome. TESL/TEFL certification is not required, but is taken into consideration. Applicants must apply through their country of citizenship.
