EFL Teacher wanted for a language centre on the south coast of Sri Lanka
Business Description:
English and More European Education Centre is currently recruiting dynamic, experienced, professional English language teachers to deliver young learner and adults courses and to build on the initial success of this centre which has two new language schools in Matara and Galle in the south of Sri Lanka.
Background to centre
English & More is a new English Education Centre Project that opened in 2008. It has two schools: one in Matara that opened in April 2008 and one in Galle that opened in October 2009. Matara is a large business centre and Galle is a smaller historic, market town. The schools are the first in their area to employ native English speaker teachers. Both are small schools; Matara has five classrooms (mostly used for our Charity work) and Galle, two. This is a unique opportunity to be involved in the development of the schools. It will be attractive to professionally minded individuals who are prepared to work with a high degree of flexibility.
Classes at the schools
The maximum number of learners on a class is twelve. Young Learners (from the age of 6) are aiming at the UCLES Starters Movers and Flyers exams and adults are aiming at the UCLES suite of KET, PET, FCE and CAE exams. Both general and business English are covered. The popularity of these exams in Sri Lanka is such that although there are only small numbers sitting these exams in the schools currently, this is expected to rise sharply.
The centre is looking for:
(a) An EFL teacher. This is a challenging job for (newly) qualified teacher to teach 24 hours a week. The job would be ideal for either newly qualified CELTA teachers or experienced TEFL teachers. Experienced teachers must demonstrate an ability to create syllabuses for all TEFL levels. Experience of the following is desirable though not essential:-
·generating course materials
·teaching young learners and teaching for YL exams
·teaching Asian learners
·teaching in more than one country
A professional approach is the key as is a personal desire to play a major part in this new and exciting project. Teachers must be team players prepared to share their experience with those less experienced.
The centre is happy to consider teaching couples. It will also consider volunteer teachers (who will receive some training) or part time teachers in the country already to do two or three days work a week.
Salary and Conditions:
- Contracts are usually for one year.
- Partime teaching is negotiable.
- Matara - Galle : SLR 35,000- SLR 50,000 (based on qualifications and experience)
The salary and the conditions vary according to the working hours/contract.
By Western standards the salary the centre can offer at this stage of its development is quite low. However, by Sri Lankan standards the teaching salary is excellent and is more than enough to have a comfortable lifestyle in Matara or Galle:
– accommodation not included. (Can be provided in Galle)
Help will be given to find accommodation.

(b) The centre offers a training facility for motivated people wanting to complete their Online TEFL courses, as well as gain valuable teaching experience.
There would be the possibility of providing accommodation to the trainee TEFL teachers and they would have constant support during their stay.
Start date: late August.
