Immediate Start - Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia
This position is for an immediate start.
We are looking for a qualified and experienced English teacher who is comfortable teaching all levels and ages, but particularly Young Learners. Candidates must be enthusiastic, self-motivated and be able to work independently as well as part of a team.
Our school is a small, independently-owned establishment which is known for its fun and effective teaching practices. Much of our business comes from word-of-mouth, and many of our students have been with us for several years; therefore, it is important for us to hire teachers who find it easy to create a strong rapport with the students.
The age range of our students is 6 to adult, but the majority are teenagers. Most students come from the more affluent section of society and are, with very little exception, polite and respectful. Most of them have a very heavy school schedule with lots of extra-curricular activities, so one of the challenges here is to keep some very tired students engaged.
Living in a developing country can be a challenging experience and the infrastructure here in Medan is rudimentary. There are frequent power-cuts, the roads are generally poor, the traffic is quite insane and the public transport system is basic to say the least. On the other hand, the people here are generally polite, friendly and interested in other cultures. Medan is on the doorstep of some beautiful scenery, such as Lake Toba and Bukit Lawang. The social scene amongst expats here is small but healthy and may require time to find, as bars and restaurants are spread quite randomly around the city. Medan is beginning to become more cosmopolitan but it is still a poor cousin to many of the more established Southeast Asian countries. To live and work here you must be patient, adaptable, independently-minded and above all have a great sense of humour.
There has recently been a tightening up of Immigration requirements, and candidates must now be aged between 25-55. You must have a degree in a relevant subject, a TEFL certificate and at least 5 years experience showing on your CV. Without meeting all of these requirements we will not be able to secure a work visa for you. You must also be from an country that has English as its first language. Please do not apply if you don't meet these requirements. Only short-listed candidates will be contacted.
Our packages start at around 14,000,000 Rupiah, depending on qualifications and experience, and include flight and housing allowance. It can be very cheap to live here, depending on your lifestyle, and so it is easily possible to save money. We also provide medical insurance. The school takes care of the visa.
