ELEMENTARY LEVEL ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) TEACHERS

Academia Hebrea seeks exceptional ELEMENTARY LEVEL ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) TEACHERS who are highly qualified and knowledgeable to join our community of teachers, learners and leaders. REPORTS TO: Principal/Headmaster/Board of Directors

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. TEACH: English as a Second Language for Elementary aged students (up to 6th grade). Additionally, be able to teach age appropriate courses in Mathematics and/or science.

-Provide individualized and classroom Elementary English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction to non-native speakers. Develop curriculum for English as a Second Language Program at the Academia Hebrea.

-Collaborate and communicate with the school's instructional leadership team, instructional coaches and administration to ensure students receive language support and other forms of academic assistance.

2. EQUITY AND HIGH EXPECTATIONS: Demonstrate a commitment to excellence, equity, and high expectations for all students with an emphasis on building on the strengths that students bring to the teaching/learning process and improving the English as a Second Language (ESL) curriculum at the Academia Hebrea. Administer mid-year and end-of-year assessments in accordance with the Academia Hebrea’s guidelines.

3. PROFESSIONALISM: Model professional behavior that addresses job responsibilities, district policies and procedures, and the expectations of professionals working at the Academia Hebrea.

4. SAFE, RESPECTFUL, AND CULTURALLY SENSITIVE AND RESPONSIVE LEARNING COMMUNITIES: Build and maintain safe, fair, and respectful learning environments for all students.

5. PARTNERSHIPS WITH FAMILY: Initiate and maintain consistent communication and develop constructive partnerships with families communicating about student progress and ways the families can support the student’s learning of English and other content subjects at home and outside of the classroom.

6. PARTNERSHIPS WITH FAMILY AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE COMMUNITIES IN PANAMA: Initiate and maintain consistent communication and develop constructive partnerships with community members, and agencies, building on their strengths and recognizing them as co-educators.

7. INSTRUCTIONAL PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTATION:

-Plan instruction and employ strategies that address the wide range of learning, behavioral, and communication styles of the student population.

-Plan and deliver lessons utilizing curriculum such as the Massachusetts English Language Proficiency Benchmarks and Outcomes, and deliver appropriate lessons for varying levels of English proficiency throughout the classroom.

-Demonstrate cultural proficiency and use effective and culturally relevant instructional practices in the classroom.

-Integrate technology into the classroom as an instructional tool and for personal productivity.

8. CONTENT KNOWLEDGE:

-Have extensive knowledge of the content including, but not limited to, key concepts and facts, relevant research, methods of inquiry, and communication styles specific to the respective discipline(s).

-Demonstrate understanding of standards-based education, including various content frameworks, and curriculums for literacy, English Language Development, English Language Arts, and Elementary Education.

-Implement aspects of Readers and Writers workshop model that match the language proficiency level of students.

-Demonstrate an understanding and fluency with state or province ESL Curriculums like the Massachusetts DOE English Language Proficiency Benchmarks and Outcomes (ELPRO).

9. MONITORING AND ASSESSMENT OF PROGRESS: Use a variety of assessment tools and strategies to gather data to monitor student mastery of instructional content, to improve instruction, and to assess the comparative performance of subgroups within the classroom.

10. REFLECTION, COLLABORATION, AND PERSONAL GROWTH: Reflect on practice in collaboration with administrators and colleagues, monitor personal and professional growth, and pursue professional development in needed areas.

QUALIFICATIONS--REQUIRED:

1. United States or Canadian citizenship.

2. Hold a valid Teaching License in ELL (or ESL) PreK-6, and Elementary Education in any of the 50 United States, Washington DC, or 13 Canadian Provinces/Territories.

3. Bachelor's degree in the field of instruction, Master’s degree preferred.

4. Experience: Three years of full-time recent teaching experience in a U.S. or Canadian public school at the elementary level.

5. Willingness to serve an initial two-year contact with the Academia Hebrea (employment is at-will).

6. Attend community sponsored professional development opportunities sufficient to stay current with changes in elementary education, ESL instruction, and improvements in ESL teaching strategies.

7. Able to model excellent spoken and written English for students learning English in school.

8. Teaching portfolio that showcases capacity for success at the Academia Hebrea.

QUALIFICATIONS—PREFERED:

1. Proficiency in Spanish Language.

2. Experience teaching specific subject content in Mathematics or Science to elementary aged students.

COMPENSATION:

1. All salaries are officially established in US Dollars, paid monthly in US Dollars.

2. Salaries are subject to Panamanian Income Tax.

3. Furnished housing provided. Housing will be shared with up to two additional English Language teachers. Utilities are not included.

4. Medical insurance provided.

5. Air transportation to home of record provided at the completion of contract.

6. Moving allowance - US$500 upon arrival to Panama; US$500 upon departure.

7. Others

* Full reimbursement for visa procurement expenses.

* Lunch for teacher free of charge on school days in school cafeteria.

* Automobile provided (to be shared with up to two additional teachers). Automotive insurance will be provided but teachers are required to pay for gasoline and upkeep of the automobile.

* Sick Leave, Bereavement Leave/Airfare, Personal Day.
