Job Description

Come and teach English in Semarang, Central Java

As winter closes in and the days grow shorter and colder, wouldn’t you like to be living and working in a hot, sunny, tropical country? We are looking to recruit new English teachers to come and join our small, but dedicated team of English Teachers at English First Semarang, Indonesia. Our current teaching team has been working together for several years now with the majority of teachers on their fifth consecutive contract or more.

Semarang is the capital city of Central Java. While not as modern as Jakarta or Surabaya, Semarang has all the modern facilities that the average westerner requires. Most importantly, it is a very safe and peaceful place in which to live and work. The cost of living here is quite low when compared to that of the bigger cities. Located right in the centre of the island, it is less than an hour’s flight from the capital Jakarta and Bali. It is very easy to travel from Semarang to other popular locations in Central Java, like Yogyakarta and Solo. There is also a daily ferry from Semarang to the Karimunjawa Islands.

Our school is quite small with only eight classrooms but it is very busy. Class sizes are limited to 16, but many classes are smaller than this. Students’ ages range from 4 to 40 with the majority being at high school or at University. Their level of ability varies from absolute beginners through to advanced users and we teach the full range of English courses, including Business English and International Exams. The school has a computer room with up-to-date software and two of our classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards. Most of our classes meet in the afternoons and evenings on Mondays to Fridays. At the moment, none of our teachers are required to teach any classes on Saturdays.

The successful candidate should possess:

A recognized teaching certificate or have a minimum of two years teaching experience.

A valid passport from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the USA. No other passport is acceptable due to strict Indonesian immigration regulations.

An enthusiastic desire to teach students of all ages, especially Young Learners.

Patience, a positive attitude, and sense of humor.

Also desirable, but not necessary is a TKT (Teaching Knowledge Test) certificate issued by Cambridge ESOL. This is a requirement for all native-speaking teachers working with EF. The test can be taken after the teacher arrives.

The successful candidate will receive the following:

* A renewable one-year contract with a salary allowing a comfortable lifestyle and travel within Indonesia.

* Round-trip airfare.

* Full working visa.

* A bonus of one month's salary upon contract completion.

* Fifteen paid vacation days per year. On top of that, there are approximately 12-15 days of public holidays as declared by the government.

* Health insurance.

* Accomodation is provided for the first year of teaching.
