Job Description

Priority - Primary Native ESL Teacher Position

Shelton DG provides ESL teaching for State schools in North Vietnam and we provide comprehensive course books and expectations for our teachers within the framework of the ‘Tieng Anh National Curriculum’. We are also heavily focused on British standards of education and IELTS training; however we do provide 1-1 courses that are geared toward US standards.

During 2009 – 2010, Shelton DG employed 4 teachers on piecemeal contracts, who worked without any resources, and in lessons where only a small proportion of students completed written work. (This short paragraph is a useful facsimile of the industry in North Vietnam). I joined this company in October of the year 2010 and we introduced a new employee handbook, increased the rates of pay for all staff, and we also managed to establish the foundations for a good system.

By October 2011, we had increased the number of teachers from 5 to 10, acquired two more public school clients, and achieved a 150% increase in private contracts. In addition, we managed to introduce three new textbooks for over 4000 students aged 14-18, and a comprehensive testing system. The BoD is now able to accurately assess student performance and we have found that more than 60% of our pupils have managed to double the amount of work they have completed since the new textbooks were introduced, 5 of our original 10 teachers are planning to return for the academic year 2011-2012, and we have hired six new teachers but still have one position available in Ha Long for September 20th 2012.

We have a particular need for primary level teachers, a skilled-teacher of Maths / Science, and a IELTS specialist.

We offer 8 ½ month contracts from the 5Th September to the 15th may 2012, for between 15 – 22 hours a week, and we pay between $22 and $25 per hour for experienced and qualified teachers; inexperienced teachers earn between $18 and $22 per hour.

We prefer to process work permit applications for committed individuals, however you must have the original certificate of your Bachelor degree and an English teaching certificate (Tesol, Tefl, Celta, etc.) in order to obtain a work permit.

We are also have a clause whereby our teachers receive 100% of their pay if a lesson is cancelled within 8 hours of when it was due to start.
Our faults encompass the following:
- We provide no extra bonuses and no holiday pay.
- Though our state classrooms are functional, they are often poorly maintained, and I would describe them as ‘fit for purpose’.
- The bottom 40% of our year 11 students have yet to improve on a poor standard of work.

When applying for a position with Shelton DG, please include an interesting cover letter, your CV, and scanned copies of all relevant, security checks, health checks and qualifications, and please send these documents to loan.shelton.english@gmail.com before 20th September 2012.

Successful candidates will be provided with a soft-copy of our contract and Staff handbook in preparation for their interview (80 pages). Potential candidates should note that we have very little tolerance for poorly committed ESL teachers, and that we aim to recruit candidates with an ability to emulate professional teaching standards.
