Job Description

EFL teacher for small language school in the Basque Country

We are seeking a teacher of English as a foreign language for our language school in the Basque Country (Spain): This is the job profile:

Hernani Hizkuntzak is a small language school that caters exclusively for the needs of Hernani, Gipuzkoa, a town with a population of about 20,000. We've been in business for over 25 years, so we are pretty well-known locally, have a good name and good academic results (European C2, C1, B2, B1 levels). Hernani is about 9 km from the centre of San Sebastian. Public transport is very good: there are local trains and three bus lines. The train takes about 10minutes, the direct bus, about 20.

The work will involve teaching group and individual classes, principally the former. Maximum class size is 12; average is 8. We teach children and adults and a typical timetable involves workwithboth. We would need someone who can competently give classes to CAE (European C2) level. The next academic year begins on 1 October and ends, for teachers, on 22 June.

The contract covers health (the health service is excellent in the Basque Country), social security, EU-harmonised pension contributions, and unemployment benefit (the latter for the months of July, August and September, but I understand that payments only commence once the applicant has worked in the country for 12 months. Inother words, a teacher would not be able to claim benefit at the end of the first term of contract, but would be eligible on all subsequent occasions.(you have to work a minimum period to be entitled to this) as well as (). Two weeks - or thereabouts - holidays at Xmas and at least 10 days at Easter; also public holidays and some "rolling weekends", all included.

Most of our work is in the afternoon-evening, but there may be morning or midday classes too. Contact hours would be about 20 hours per week. 3-5 hours on Monday to Thursday and 2-3 on Fridays; free Saturdays and Sundays). We start at 4 or 5pm and finish, at the latest, at 21:30 (there are no classes on Fridays after 7 p. m.). Other weekday classes may be offered such as classes in companies at 8-9am, or in the school at 9-10/11am, in which case extra salary would be negotiated. Availability and readiness to teach such classes, if they arise, would be a plus for the successful candidate.

Our teachers have as minimum qualifications a degree from a reputable university and a TEFL certificate from an internationally recognised body. Given the characteristics of the job, we need someone with relevant classroom experience. Knowledge of Spanish would be a decided advantage.

The working atmosphere in the school is relaxed and friendly. There are usually three or four teachers in their classrooms at a given time. The conditions are very good. Assuming the teacher is good, proficient and conscientious, we tend to leave our teachers alone and let them get on with the job of teaching (minimum meetings, paper work and termly reports' content cut to the bone).

The salary for 20 contact hours is €1,400 to €1,500 net monthly on contract and for employees without dependents or mortgages. The employee would have the rightto claim unemployment benefit for the months of July, August and September (a minimum period of work is required for entitlement).

We would assist with finding accommodation in Hernani, where the academy is, or in the nearby city of Donostia-San Sebastian.
