English Teacher/Department Head

Ilya Kravtsov

Job Description

English Teacher/Department Head

AT University is an innovative educational foundation delivering quality education to the Horn of Africa region. It consists of primary, seconday, undergraduate and graduate levels of educational institutions, as well as additional vocational and tutoring programs. As the only organization in Somaliland and Somalia delivering education of a truly world standard, it is positioned to impact the lives of the people in this misfortunate region more than any other institution could.

We are currently seeking three new ESL teachers for our university and vocational English program, with the top candidate becoming its head. As the program is only two years old, all three would play a crucial role in its continued development and putting it on the right academic track. As a group, these teachers would be responsible for continuing to develop the program curriuculum that would accommodate both the university students for whom English would be a part of their regular university classwork, and the adults that only attend English classes vocationally. The end goal for both groups will be preparing the students to pass the TOEFL test with a sufficient result to be employed in an organization that uses English as a working language, or attend a university where English is the medium of instruction.

All in all, the role will have a very high workload (approximately 20 hours a week of teaching alone), but also a degree of responsibility going far beyond just language instruction, as the curriculum and academic foundation put in place in the next academic year will be the cornerstone of AT University for years to come.

Specifically, we are looking for people that:

-Are a native speaker of English and have a college degree

-Have some ESL experience or has majored in language/education or has an advanced degree

-Is adaptable and mentally tough (preferrably with some experience living in the developing world); the region is one of the least developed places in the world and living here can be very daunting to a Westerner.

In return, we offer a roundtrip airfare, room and board in a nice villa with the other teachers, travel insurance, a modest $3000 a year salary and a chance to be a part of something truly special.
