Professional Development

We are committed to high standards of teaching and training for teachers. Our professional development program includes:
•        Regular observations schedule plus ‘pop-in’ observations
•        Annual Professional Development Interviews

•        IH in-service courses (e.g. the IHCYL and BET).
•        DELTA sponsorship available (after 3 months employment) of up to $1000 on passing, plus a further 25% of fees per further year working for Apollo (up to a maximum of $1000 per year and a total of $4000)

Competitive Package

Costs of living are such that you can enjoy a very comfortable lifestyle in Vietnam – most of our teachers eat out every night, and spend holidays traveling in Asia without working too hard to save
•        Salary: 1160 USD – 1500 USD per month, depending on qualifications and experience (tax is payable on a sliding scale, most teachers pay around 10%)
•        Medical insurance allowance: 550 USD per year
•        Flight allowance: 500 USD per year (paid at the end of contract)
•        Bonus: End of year bonus is paid at $1 per hour taught during the year. Teachers are contracted to teach 240 hours/quarter, so bonus will usually be at least $850 (allowing for annual leave, national holidays and sick days). If teachers teach over their required hours they will be paid per hour plus increase their bonus. (NB Bonus is also taxable income)
•        20 [twenty] working days paid annual leave and an additional nine [nine] paid days off for national holidays.


Interesting range of teaching opportunities

YL/ Kindy / G.E./ IELTS / TOEFL preparation courses, plus Business English, English for Academic Purposes and specialised courses (e.g. Pronunciation), as we expand our program for corporate & public clients.
Teachers are encouraged to teach across a range of courses.
We also run courses in other cities as part of our corporate program, and there are opportunities to be based in Danang or to spend time in one of the provincial cities or towns (for example Haiphong) , to really get a feel for Vietnam – see below for further information.

Timetable

240 hours per quarter - normally scheduled at 21-23 hours per week. The Kindy program is at the weekends year round. YL program is at the weekends except during summer when it expands to weekdays. Most adult teaching hours are in the evening, although some corporate teaching is daytime. Classes run from 7.30am to 9.30pm, 7 days a week, with mornings and evenings the most popular. Split shifts are inevitable, but we try to keep them to a minimum for individuals.

Support

The Academic team includes an Academic Manager, Academic Coordinators and/or Senior teachers plus support staff in each location. They are there to support you in both academic and personal matters and will help you settle into your new life in Vietnam.

The school does not provide accommodation, but can arrange a hotel (at a modest cost) for arrival, and offer help in finding longer term housing when you arrive. You will be met at the airport and taken to your hotel.

*Danang*

Danang is an up-and-coming city in Central Vietnam, located on the coast. There are a lot fewer expatriates than in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, which means you get more of a feel of ‘real’ Vietnamese culture living here. The roads are quieter and therefore life can be less stressful here than in the two main cities, although there is still the lively atmosphere of a city on the move.
The beach is only ten minutes from the city centre, and while not of the ‘palm-fringed’ variety, it is clean and wide and stretches for miles. The option of a late afternoon snack and drink in the fresh air at one of the restaurants on the beach is one of the benefits of living here.
Danang is also ideally located for the attractions of the central region. Hoi An, with its ancient buildings and cosmopolitan restaurants is less than an hour away. A few hours in the other directions are Hue, the home of the Imperial Citadel and the Royal Tombs, and the mountains and Ba Na Hill Station. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh are also easily accessible by air from Danang Airport.

There is a range of good Vietnamese restaurants, and several foreign restaurants (including French and Japanese, and a Czech microbrewery).

*Haiphong*
Haiphong is Vietnam's third-largest city (behind Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi), located 100km east of Hanoi on the coast of northern Vietnam. It is a major seaport and the main hub of northern Vietnam's industrial activity.
It’s a small, orderly city of broad avenues and colonial architecture. Although an industrial city it still has a cultured, traditional feel, with open spaces that give you plenty of room to breath. Den Nghe Temple, noted for its carvings, and the city's Tam Bac Lake are two of the notable features.
Besides a range of Vietnamese restaurants, there are restaurants serving European, Chinese and vegetarian food - and of course the seafood is excellent.
Haiphong has good hydrofoil and ferry links to Cat Ba Island, putting the World Heritage Site of Halong Bay right on your doorstep. It is also only a few hours from Hanoi, and within easy reach of the northern area of Vietnam for further exploration.

•        BA or MA (NB this is essential for Work Permit requirements)
•        CELTA/ Trinity TESOL or equivalent
•        At least one year’s experience or B in CELTA etc.
•        Enthusiasm, energy and a strong sense of cultural awareness are essential.

Work Permit
All expatriate staff require a visa PLUS a work permit. Apollo applies for a business visa before the employee departs their current country of residence. All costs for visa and all costs for Work Permit documents incurred in Vietnam are covered by Apollo (Visa and other receipts required). Work Permit costs incurred outside Vietnam such as notarization of qualifications (for US citizens) and the criminal background check are the employees' responsibility. Employees will need to provide originals of documents (TEFL cert & degree) for notarization in Vietnam (non-US citizens). A medical check, done locally, (including blood test) is also required. Apollo will assist in getting this done and cover costs.
