Teaching scheme launched!
Edith Musoke, an experienced teacher from Mbarara committed to improving rural teaching and learning, is making agreements with schools and teachers, designing English language materials, and preparing guidelines for holiday activities. Edith will start as Volunteer Coordinator for Schools and train a local teacher.
On her own initiative and with help from Edmund Ahabwe, the KICS Transition Manager, and local two teachers, Edith has launched interactive teaching on seven Saturdays in the December and January holidays, with an emphasis on speaking; schools and teachers have offered space and time, Ronco caregivers are cooking for the extra 116 alongside the 60 Ronco children. This is a wonderful mobilisation and demonstration of community enthusiasm. UK and Swedish friends have given a laptop and a camera, and several specialists have advised on language teaching techniques and models. Thank you to all these contributors!
Recruiting Volunteers
We must keep this wonderful impetus going by recruiting volunteers for:
Term-time in primary schools — English in small groups plus sports and social activities
Holiday schemes in August and December/January — stories, plays, craft activities, sports, outings
Classroom teaching in secondary schools — qualified teachers for at least a month
Capacity building for local staff and stakeholders by suitably qualified and experienced volunteers; other possible openings as project needs arise.
The scheme is on http://www.gap-year.com and http://www.volunteering4africa.org as well as http://www.responsibletravel.com and http://www.kiuganda.org. Andy’s great story on his experience in schools comes up under News on http://www.gap-year.com by clicking on our banner (banners rotate).
Fundraising
Essay competition: sponsorship for the printing of posters and annual prizes for this popular competition at Nombe Secondary School — ideas for topics, prizes for every year group and the overall winner. Would you take this on? £60 - £100 pa should be enough.
We hope volunteers will fundraise for this work — stationery and games equipment; meals and outings for holidays schemes; supervision and guidance of volunteers by a local teacher; evaluation expenses.
