Kanaama Interactive Posting Dec 2015
Volunteer Teacher and Activities Organiser in Uganda
Summary: Small-group English teaching in upper classes of rural primary schools; run holiday schemes with games and outings; guidance and supervision by local teacher.
Description: Explore life through a different lens? Gain experience of cross-cultural education? Kanaama Interactive (KI), a non-profit team, facilitates volunteering in the pretty sub-county of Kashare in SW Uganda. We invite you to teach English as the gateway to secondary education, particularly people on career breaks, sabbaticals, or looking for a fresh challenge. You have so much to offer!
Come as a qualified teacher, unqualified volunteer, or student — for classroom teaching, small group work, or social activities. Qualified teachers at primary or secondary levels are welcome for at least a month; others, possibly for shorter periods, work at higher primary levels, guided by a local teacher. Teaching materials are provided, together with ideas for stories, plays, craft activities, sports, outings. We hope you will add to these!
We work with Kanaama Interactive Community Support (KICS), a small UK charity (1132288) with its office in Kashare. Projects include women’s microcredit, agricultural training, smokeless stoves, support for 60 orphans and vulnerable children, and women’s literacy. KICS welcomes offers from qualified and experienced volunteers of capacity building for local staff and stakeholders.
You stay in a comfortable house, with a warm welcome and delicious food from family members of one of KI’s directors. Read our visitor blogs and reports! Week-end game-park and gorilla visits are possible. KI charges of £500 for a month are negotiable for longer periods. For travel info see our Visitor’s Guide under http://www.kiuganda.org/visit-kanaama/advice/.
* Being involved with Kanaama Interactive in sustainable community development was a great learning experience. I often think what a wonderful experience it was, with a brilliant community and beautiful location. I would love to visit again. (Megan)
* The perfect way to learn about life in the rural areas of Uganda. I was amazed by the wonderful ideas that many of the local people had, their level of knowledge about problems and possible solutions. (Peter)

2-month visit alongside a local teacher arranging the reception/supervision of volunteers in primary schools, and producing packages for small-group English teaching.
Job Description
Kanaama Interactive (KI) facilitates volunteering, working closely together with Kanaama Interactive Community Support (KICS), a small UK-registered charity linked with a rural community in south west Uganda. KICS’ main initiatives are: a women’s microcredit scheme, smokeless stove building, agricultural training, an in-depth programme for 60 orphaned and vulnerable children, and a literacy programme for women.
We are transferring the strategic and administrative management of KICS work to the staff and KICS-Ug Board in Kashare, the sub-county in which KICS operates, and volunteer placements need to sit well within the new arrangements. You would help to streamline our volunteering system: we would like schools volunteers to be locally supervised and not take up time of the main staff; we would also like to have a bank of ready-made materials available for volunteers, which we would invite them to add to.
The core purpose of this part of our volunteering system is to support schools and children with English-learning, the passport to secondary education in Uganda, and vital in a rural community where many parents have had little or no experience of education or of English. As our ‘Kanaama Interactive’ suggests, we have a strong commitment to two-way dialogue, to which volunteers contribute strongly.
We are looking for an experienced teacher to go to Kanaama for two months as a volunteer to develop two education packages and negotiate the reception and supervision of volunteers in schools. Your work would centre on three or four schools close to Kanaama, where you would be staying, on a pilot basis. You would work in conjunction with a local primary school teacher, drawing on local specialist advice. You would hopefully have prior experience of producing guidelines and materials for small group activities and English teaching, and/or collect examples of best practice to bring with you.
As you see from our website, Kanaama is well-placed for visits to game parks in the south (with gorillas) and in the west (Ruwenzoori Mts andthe marvellous Queen Elisabeth National Park). Mbarara, 25 miles to the south, is a bustling town where we have good links with the University (MUST).
Add: it offers a challenging and rewarding experience in development education and cross-cultural collaboration, and would prepare for well-organised contributions by future volunteers in the crucial area of English learning.
