Position Overview:
Open English is searching for native English speakers to provide academic services for beginner to advanced students from the comfort of their own home, or in our Miami office. Our Academic Specialists enjoy a flexible work schedule and impact student success on a daily basis by leading group classes and private classes, and by providing feedback and curriculum support to the Company.
Academic Specialists must provide ten (10) hours minimum of availability each week (including 5 peak time hours). Academic support is needed 7 days a week, 24 hours each day, meaning that a variety of availabilities can be accommodated. Academic Specialists submit their own master schedule and must maintain the same availability week-to-week. Part time seasonal employees are allowed to submit for up to 30 days of unpaid time off each year.
Academic Specialists are given per diem/seasonal status, which means hours are not guaranteed. Our peak season runs from January to April. During the off-peak season, Academic Specialists will remain on payroll with zero (0) hours at times, and be assigned as need arises.
Responsibilities:
- Complete the Open English certification program and participate in ongoing professional development workshops
- Deliver high quality, synchronous English language instruction in group classes, through our proprietary learning environment platform (audio/video based) and utilizing the curriculum, online pedagogy and teaching methodology provided to guarantee a consistent student experience
- Deliver effective and engaging private instruction
- Provide quality feedback to students
- Be familiar with the full product offerings and educate students on available products to further their education
- Upsell students on new product offerings as directed by the Company
- Respond to student questions and translation requests
- Participate in open group discussions with students
- Work collaboratively with academic staff to develop new content and curriculum
- Create short video clips on topics designated by the Content Team
- Collaborate with staff on session quality and reporting student issues observed
- Create professional development modules as needed
- Assist in the development of new products as needed
- Provide training/mentorship to new Academic Specialists
- Respond to inquiries, complaints, and feedback on various systems and databases
- Maintain knowledge of the Open English learning platform, brand, Company policies and goals, internal communication systems, and the customer population
Qualifications:
- Must be based in the United States and work authorization in the U.S. is required
- Must have prior experience teaching English, preferably as a second language, online experience preferred
- Must be able to communicate in English both clearly and professionally, both orally and in writing
- Conversational Spanish and/or Portuguese is preferred
- Committed to creating safe learning environments for English language learners
- TESOL, TEFL, CELTA or equivalent preferred
- Completed or current study at an accredited institute of higher education in Linguistics, Education, English, Modern Languages or Literatures, or related field; Bachelor's degree or higher preferred
- Must possess an awareness of and interest in Latino society and culture
- Must have an awareness of various written and spoken English discourse patterns, including written style choices
- Ability to communicate complex linguistic patterns in simplified “learner-centered” language
- General awareness of and ability to apply the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
- Familiarity with ESL assessments, with the ability to evaluate and create assessments
- Proficiency with Microsoft Suite, Adobe products, Google Suite, Skype, Dropbox, and an ability to quickly master various online communication and storage tools
- Comfortable in a dynamic work environment
