About Institute of Foreign Affairs
Established in 1993, the Institute of Foreign Affairs (IFA) is an academic research institution under the supervision of the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs.
The Institute has two main tasks:
(i) to conduct strategic studies and research on foreign policies and international relations with a view to contributing to the provision of recommendations and alternatives on the formulation
and implementation of Lao foreign policy aimed at promoting peace, independence, friendship and co-operation amongst the countries of the region and the world; and (ii) planning and training diplomats, government officials and individuals from the private sectors at both central and provincial levels in international relations, diplomatic skills and foreign languages.
The Institute is also tasked with expanding co- operative relations with research and academic institutions of foreign countries with a view to developing technical and educational co-operation, exchanging information, knowledge and research findings and engaging in the Track II process.
The Institute is a member of the ASEAN Institute for Strategic and International Studies (ASEAN-ISIS) and is the national co-ordinator for the Network of East Asian Think Tanks (NEAT) and approaches Asian Co-operation Dialogue (ACD) projects.
You will:
- Develop an English training programme and materials, update the curriculum and train IFA’s trainers both in English and as trainers who use and update the curriculum regularly.
- Assist with strengthening the English language skills of the IFA officials to allow for better engagement with regional and international opportunities.
- Update English language teaching and training materials (intermediate and advanced levels) for IFA English courses for use by Lao diplomats and government officials.
- Ensure that course modules, seminars, workshops and English training courses are always conducted in English at IFA
- Seek regular support and guidance from an e-mentor
- Identify gender mainstreaming activities and initiatives that directly tackle issues relating to inclusion (people with disabilities, indigenous minority groups, and people living with HIV/AIDS).
Essential Academic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Linguistics, English or other related field
- TESL/TESOL certification
Essential Professional Background/Competencies
- Strong communication skills in English (written and oral)
- Experience in teaching English as a second language
- Experience with mentoring, tutoring and supporting skills acquisition
- Experience working in a cross-cultural, multi-lingual environment
- Experience with training of teachers/trainer
- Experience of active learning methodologies and ToT

Important information for candidates

Cuso International covers the following costs:
- Return airfare and visa/permit costs
- Accommodation while overseas
- Modest living allowance while overseas
- Modest support for accompanying partners and dependents going on placement with you for 12 months or longer
- The cost of required vaccinations, antimalarial medication and health insurance
- Access to Employee Assistance Program while overseas and upon return
- Travel and accommodation for reintegration debriefing weekend
- Travel and accommodation for the five-day pre-departure training course and in-country training orientation
Fundraising: We ask each volunteer, regardless of placement length, to raise $2,000. All volunteers receive support from Cuso International to help achieve the goal through fundraising. If the volunteer chooses not to fundraise or is unable to achieve the fundraising goal, he/she can make a one-time donation or become a monthly donor to support our work.
E-volunteering: Depending on the nature of the placement, the volunteer might be required to provide e-volunteering support to the local partner or Cuso International before or after the field placement.
About IYIP
The International Youth Internship Program (IYIP) is part of the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy, which provides Canadian youth with the tools and experience they need to launch successful careers.
The IYIP is designed to offer Canadian post-secondary graduates the opportunity to gain professional experience through international development work. The IYIP intern must:
- Be post-secondary graduate; graduate of a degree or diploma program in a university, college, post-secondary school of technology, post-secondary institute or a CEGEP (Collège d'enseignement général et professionnel, Québec). The candidate who is enrolled in, but has not yet completed, post-secondary studies is not eligible;
- Be between the age of 19 and 30 at the time of final selection;
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
- Be legally entitled to work in Canada and;
- Have not previously participated in Global Affairs Canada's IYIP.
The IYIP volunteer will be matched with an e-mentor who will provide strategic support and guidance with their placement through online tools, e.g. email, skype (pre-departure, in-service and post-return).
