English Teaching Assistant

NDG is a Dutch-Guatemalan nonprofit working to break the cycle of poverty in Guatemala by providing quality education to those who need it most. Since our founding in 2006, we have opened two primary schools and one middle schools which now serve more than 470 Guatemalan children from low-income families in the towns of Ciudad Vieja and San Lorenzo de Cubo.

We take a holistic approach to education providing psychology and social work services alongside a nutritional program.

Position Description

The English Teaching Assistant position is an unpaid volunteer position. The role is designed so that you will get to work closely with the English teacher at one of our schools in either Ciudad Vieja or San Lorenzo el Cubo, two villages outside of La Antigua, Guatemala. All of our teachers, including our English teachers, are from Guatemala. As English speakers we have a natural ability with the English language and can be a valuable resource to NDG´s local English teachers.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting the English teacher with their own English language learning.
    • Individual tutoring
    • Answering questions relating to vocabulary, grammar and functionality
    • Working on the correct pronunciation of the language
  • Helping to plan lessons with the teacher in line with the regulated curriculum
  • Preparing classroom materials and homework
  • Correcting work completed by the children

Requirements

  • TEFL or CELTA trained (or equivalent)
  • A commitment of 4 months
  • Fluent English speaker
  • A responsible, creative and independent work attitude
  • Ability to support oneself financially for the duration of the role
  • Dedication to NDG´s mission and its goals
