TEFL Lecturer

Marcy Pursell

Job Description

TEFL Lecturer

Before You Apply

Peace Corps Response positions are open to returned Volunteers or U.S. citizens with significant professional and technical experience.

Project Description

Three Peace Corps Response Volunteers (PCRVs) are needed to serve as TEFL Lecturers. English became the national medium of instruction in 2008. Therefore, many students have not yet mastered the language to enable them to follow courses taught in English, causing difficulties in their learning process and achieving the required learning outcomes. In a bid to improve students’ English proficiency, PCRVs will contribute in imparting knowledge and skills, specifically in areas where non-native English teachers feel uncomfortable like writing, speaking and listening skills. Students need exposure to native accents. They need access to the culture of the target language, and a conducive environment where English is used in its authenticity.

The TEFL Lecturers should have a Master's degree in TEFL, TESOL or TESL and are needed to work with university lecturers and students on improving the English proficiency at universities. The PCRVs will be expected:

• To teach speaking skills putting emphasis on functional and situational language by introducing students to appropriate expressions used to do things such as making inquiries, apologizing, expressing a wish, opinion, language used in restaurants, banks, hospitals, airplanes etc., and introducing students to elements of the English culture

• To introduce students to strategies and techniques of oral presentation

• To teach listening for specific and general information by listening to casual and prepared speeches, listening to radio and/or broadcasts or recorded documentaries, listening to English speakers in various conditions, watching TV shows in English and in students’ content areas

• To help lecturers prepare English language teaching modules as well as help them improve English skills

• To observe students in teaching practice where applicable

• To reinforce and coach students’ English and debate clubs in extra-curricular activities

• To support research initiatives under University of Rwanda/Centre for Language Enhancement

The goal of this assignment is to improve the overall English speaking and listening skills of students and faculty at assigned universities.
