Comments from our current teachers:

“Surat Thani International School (STIS) focuses on a positive work environment as well as student and teacher happiness and well-being. Every teacher is engaged with those goals in mind. The Thai staff are friendly, kind, welcoming, and helpful. The students are wonderful, too! Teaching expectations are high but you are given creative freedom with your class. The support is there if needed or wanted. I have found it an ideal school to strengthen my teaching skills. Classes are small (ranging from 6-20) which makes teaching and getting to know and understand each student’s needs easy. I am able to get feedback on my teaching when desired and the work environment is very open so teachers are always sharing ideas for their classrooms. Surat Thani town is a great city with few tourists while still having the attractions of a larger city. It's a travel hub to many destinations in Southern Thailand. It offers really good food, cheap cost of living, and easy access to beautiful beaches and mountains. The other teachers have a good community with activities, clubs, and sports that are organized in town. There is everything from charitable organizations that people volunteer with to weekly sports matches that are run and organized by foreigner in and around Surat. The work environment at STIS is collaborative and expectations are high. Teachers coming in with the motivation to work together and constantly strive to improve are the ones that succeed the most here. It is the ideal place for a teacher who wants to enjoy beautiful Thailand, experience authentic Thai food and culture, and develop into a professional, effective teacher. I'm enjoying working at STIS so much that I am going to stay here for the foreseeable future.” – Meredith Gallinger, Head Teacher/Nursery Teacher/Math Teacher

“Working at STIS has been an absolutely incredible experience. The school provides its teachers with everything that they need to excel as a teacher. Classroom sizes range from 6-20 students (20 is the maximum size) allowing teachers time to work with each student individually. There is also an abundant amount of resources available to the teachers and large classrooms that allow for a wide range of activities to keep the students engaged and happy. Pre-semester training allows teachers to become accustomed to the school and its practices while ongoing support helps new and experienced teachers alike provide the best education for their students. The paperwork is also kept to only what is necessary so that teachers can spend more time preparing their lessons for students. The increased level of autonomy does come with an expectation of effort and passion from the teacher. More simply put: if you don't actually like teaching then this is not the school for you. But if you do like teaching then you won’t find a better school.
The city of Surat Thani is also a wonderful city to live in. It is a fairly quiet city full of happy and friendly people who are more than willing to help out everyone around them and make them feel welcome. There is also a solid teacher community headed by a Canadian teacher, her Thai husband who rents motorbikes, and their ever-growing family. They are always there to help new teachers become settled and answer any questions they may have. There are also many extra-curricular activities constantly being organized among the teacher community. From weekly football matches to writer's club to holiday gatherings to whatever a new teacher decides they want to set up, there is always something going and people looking for an excuse to socialize. If you don't feel like staying in the city there is an abundance of prime tourist destinations within several hours of Surat Thani. There are the popular islands such as Koh Samui, Koh Phangnan, and Koh Tao a mere ferry ride or night boat away or the quiet beach town of Khanom and the pristine beauty of Khao Sok National Park a short motorbike ride away. It is safe to say that no matter your interests there is something for everyone who chooses to live in Surat Thani and there is no more rewarding a place to work in Surat Thani than Surat Thani International School. I've had such an amazing time this year that I've already decided to stay for a second year!” - Mitchell Rioux, Kindergarten 1 Teacher

“Surat Thani International School is a great school to work at! After working at other schools in Surat Thani I felt extremely happy about moving to STIS. It has a totally different environment than other schools in Surat and I really enjoy working there every day! The facilities are modern, class sizes are small, and the staff are always so friendly and welcoming! We get a lot of daily support and are always updated on school affairs every morning! The curriculum and text books are great because it gives the teachers freedom to adapt different teaching styles to their lessons! We don't have to follow boring lesson plans, we are encouraged to come up with new teaching styles and incorporate fun and challenging lessons for our students! It feels more like a team environment here which is really nice compared to some of the other jobs I have had. I feel like I can talk to my boss, Peter, about anything and he is always so supportive and understanding! My experience here has been great and I have already decided to stay for a second year!! This decision was made before the first semester had even ended so I would definitely recommend working here. I have nothing but positive things to say about the school!” – Emily Dickinson, Kindergarten 2 Teacher

“My time so far in Surat Thani has brought me innumerable fond memories and some of the greatest friends I’ve ever met. The teacher community here is amazing. Teachers from various schools meet up for soccer, trivia nights, writing club, art nights, and beach trips. The teacher Facebook page keeps everyone up to date with new gatherings and community events. Surat Thani has several markets for quick and cheap food, as well as bigger shopping centers. It is a great balance of a small town feel with access to amenities like movie theaters, water parks/pools, and coffee shops. At STIS, I adore my class. The Rabbits have been an unbelievable delight to teach. I’m given flexibility in the classroom to meet their needs, and I have the freedom to create a schedule that both fits the curriculum and allows for extra activities like art, science experiments, and academic centered games. It was easy for me to fall in love with Surat Thani, and it will always be a place I consider home.” – Kari Williamson, Kindergarten 2 Teacher

"As a city, I love that Surat Thani isn't a "touristy" spot in Thailand. You truly get to experience living like a local, including eating the food and learning the language (if you can). Surat Thani is known as "the city of good people" and I can honestly say this is true. I was nervous about the VISA/work permit process coming here. But the administrative staff completely walks you step by step through the entire process. They consistently go above and beyond their job description to help you settle into STIS and Surat Thani. The Thai staff at STIS is absolutely incredible. They always greet you with a smile, and provide amazing support while you're teaching and as you transition into the school. I love having a Thai teacher with me in the classroom. She's my wingman and righthand support with my kids and always makes me laugh! I love that the class sizes are all under 20 students because it gave me the chance to really get to know my kids, which not only allowed me to better understand how they learn but more importantly how I can help them improve. As the director of STIS, Peter is organized and clear with his staff. As a teacher, he offers you the freedom to manage your classroom as you please but always has an "open door" policy to offer support and advice. His expectations create the best learning environment for the kids at STIS and it's obvious his priorities are the kids and his staff. Although she's more "behind the scenes", Peter's wife, Jeab, always offers wonderful conversation and a smile when you do catch her! I’ve had a wonderful experience at STIS and highly recommend it!" – Katie Suitor, Kindergarten 3 Teacher

“Having been here now for 6 months I can say that I love the adventure of being in Thailand. There is so much beauty here and so many different options to travel around and experience a wealth of different opportunities. Surat itself is a quiet, laid back town and you have to make an effort to build relationships with your Thai staff, your co-workers, and people around the town to keep yourself busy. There currently is organized soccer once a week for the casual players and there’s enough of an expat community here to set up other group activities should you pursue them. The Thai staff is wonderful at working with the kids, helping you as a teacher in the class and school, and even working on your paperwork for work permit, visa, etc. saving you the extra work and making it even easier. Become friends with them, trust in them, and they can help make your transition to another country that much easier. Last but not least, the big boss man, Peter. When Peter tells you he’ll let you teach once you arrive, he means it. His number one goal is to put you in a position you’re comfortable with and that you’ll succeed in. He does this because he wants you to be happy but more importantly because he cares about the progress of the kids in the school. He’s always looking for ways to improve the school as well as your ability to grow as a teacher. He’s a hands-on or as hands-off as you want him to be, willing to step back and let you teach but always close by to offer support and ideas. As a first year, full-time teacher I’ve learned a lot from the school and my co-workers and I would highly recommend becoming a part of the team here.” – Kyle Miller, Grade 1 Teacher

“I can honestly say that working at STIS is the best thing about Surat Thani. The students are amazing. They are smart and funny. STIS class sizes range from 9-20 students. That means you know every student in the school. You also have your own classroom. You build a connection with your students and really get to know them. As a teacher, you know all your students’ strengths and weaknesses. The Thai and administrative staff is also wonderful. They greet you every morning with a smile. They help you with everything such as accommodations, the visa process, and even motor bike problems. They are always there to help and they are happy to do so.
Peter offers guidance and support for everyone. His expectations are very clear. He effectively communicates his point of view and will help with any questions or concerns you might have. The school is set up so that teachers have lots of freedom in the classroom and with lesson planning. Every teacher has the opportunity to grow professionally. I’ve had a great experience here and developed a lot as a teacher. Highly recommended!” – Michelle Bourassa, Grade 2 Teacher

“Working at STIS has been a fantastic experience. It is a school where I have control over my class and can be a creative educator while teaching my students. The small class sizes make it easy to do more interactive activities, and the students are amazing. The staff at STIS are all supportive, and are always there when I need ideas to teach new material. For those teachers who are looking to grow, and challenge themselves in positive ways on a daily basis, STIS is the perfect place to work. This is why I have decided to continue my exciting experience and will be teaching with STIS for an additional year!" – Megan Diffey, Grade 3 Teacher

“My operating principles have always been “Teachers make the school” and “Let teachers teach.” At STIS, we welcome teachers and entrust them with their own class to teach it the way they think is best. There is always support and collaboration available but here we really let teachers teach. You have flexibility in how to teach, how to manage the class, what supplemental materials to bring in, and how to structure the time you have with the kids. I believe in positive communication, teamwork, and productivity in the classroom. We support our teachers 100% and trust them to do their best every day for their kids. And they do! As a result, our school continues to grow while the quality of teaching continues to rise. We care about our teachers and do as much as we can to empower them so that their creativity in the classroom and teachers’ office can easily flow. Teaching becomes fun and rewarding because you can truly connect with your students and really see their development as a direct result of your efforts!” – Peter C. Meltzer, Grade 4 Teacher, Director and Founder

Comments from our former teachers:

“Becoming a teacher at STIS was the best career move I could have made. This is my second year at STIS for over a year and I still find the work extremely rewarding and enjoyable. STIS has given me the perfect teaching environment for me to develop as a teacher. The STIS team have been superb in providing me with support which I have relished and learned so much from. The whole atmosphere surrounding the school is so positive and makes your work life at STIS so fulfilling. As well the empowering ethos that STIS promotes, the freedom, the flexibility, the friendly, and supportive environment make it a very rare and remarkable school to work at.” – Marcus Wykes

“Surat Thani International School is a great place to work for many reasons but the one I enjoy most is the bond we as teachers are able to make with the students, parents, and other staff members. We are a smaller, more focused school allowing us the time to really get to know our students and their parents. Recently the teachers have been meeting after school in the school gym to engage in different exercise programs of the teacher’s choice, which really helps with overall health and getting to know everyone. Something else that I really like is that we are a fairly new school and we are invited to have an impact on a lot of the decisions made for the school. We have short meetings in the mornings allowing us to stay up to date with all that is happening and voice our own opinions. Yet another positive and rare aspect of the school is the freedom we have to take control of our class and our daily lessons. While Peter is always available for any questions, help with resources, or to deal with any issues, we are really given our own space to maximize our creativity. Working at STIS is both challenging and rewarding and is constantly progressing in a positive and exciting direction!” – Terrance Masso

“Working here at STIS is like no other teaching experience I've ever encountered. Yes, there is a phenomenal support network of teachers and staff, an immaculate facility, a ton of resources, and teacher empowerment, but what makes me absolutely delighted to come to work every day are the students. The passion and motivation pulsating through their little brains each day make them a joy to teach. I work with many different age levels at this school and with each class I am met with motivation and talent. I'm lucky to work here with such a remarkable student body. A teacher can truly make a difference in the lives of the students here.” – Steph O’Bryan

“At STIS I have been provided with the resources, flexibility, and support to effectively teach my students. It is extremely gratifying to see results from them and know how far they have come since the beginning of the year. I love working with my kids and the classroom we have created together! In addition, because of the sense of community at STIS I am excited to come into work every day. I can count on my co-workers to help me with classroom details, brainstorm new ideas, or just have a good laugh. I truly enjoy being a part of the STIS teaching team!” – Taylor Sruba

“Working at STIS this semester has given me a completely different outlook on what education can be like. Coming from working at a charter school in California just last year, I can see the huge difference between an education that is simply geared towards profit and an education that is geared towards creativity and building a love for learning, which is the way STIS approaches everything. I started at STIS in mid-January of 2017 and I feel that the transition from working back home to working here in Surat has been so much easier than I would have expected. Everyone I have met has only shown me warmth and kindness, including my students! I have received so much guidance and assistance from other teachers that are at STIS, as well as teachers that are just living in Surat. The local Thai people are the same way; only sharing their hospitality and their smiles on their faces. I also feel that Peter really takes into consideration the things that I have to say and really works on finding collaborative solutions to whatever issues or questions that arise. Everything about Surat and STIS has been wonderfully smooth sailing!” – Aida Woldegiorgis

“We’re lucky at STIS to have a great Thai staff who are an unbelievable help in the classroom every single day! They assist us in so many ways from help with lessons and classroom management, to taking care of the children’s physical needs so we can focus on teaching, as the English teacher leads the class the majority of the day. They are a huge support, without which we could not provide the safe and nurturing environment we are known for. They are also very welcoming to us ‘farang’ (foreign) teachers! They are always willing to talk about Thai culture, invite us to go on trips or to hang out, and answer any questions we have about holidays and customs. They are also very curious about where we come from, and eager to pick up English vocabulary and phrases! I’ve gotten to know my Thai teachers pretty well since we spend so much time together and I can honestly say I could not do my job without them! We are also lucky to have a tight-knit group of foreign teachers at the school who are all dedicated to providing a great environment for the students. It’s easy to see that we all take pride in our classes and really care about ‘our kids’! Many of us eat lunch together, motivate each other to work out after school, and travel together on the weekends as well. All of this makes for a supportive and fun work environment at STIS!” – Cati Vanden Breul

“Working at STIS has been an incredible experience! From day one the kids stole my heart. They are fun, sweet, and very curious learners. The staff here is incredible and greatly supportive too! I have enjoyed the whole full experience of working here. Thailand is a beautiful country and STIS is an incredible school filled with talented teachers and students. It always amazes me just how smart the students are and how much they love learning. Peter is super helpful as well! He provides you with a great deal of freedom to use your own teaching methods in the classroom and he is always there if you need any kind of support. I am beyond blessed to have had the opportunity to work at STIS, which will make it all the more difficult say “goodbye” at the end of this year. But this is an experience I will cherish for a lifetime. I have learned so much about myself through moving to Thailand and teaching at STIS. If you’re thinking about applying and moving to Thailand, do it! You’ll be amazed by the incredible people you meet and the awesome time you will have teaching this precious group of students.” – Megan Farmer

“I have been living in Suratthani, Thailand, for just over 2 years now. I can honestly say it's been one of the greatest times of my life. Because of the excellent professionalism of STIS, I never worry about paperwork being mishandled, something not being ready when it's supposed to be, or issues with communication. Removing that stressful concern from my mind has made my time in Thailand all the more enjoyable. I genuinely enjoy my work and my coworkers. It feels very much like a family. I work with the K2 level at STIS and they are absolutely wonderful. The smaller class sizes of STIS really offer a more personalized style of learning, ensuring each child gets the absolute most out of their education. We genuinely care for our kids at STIS and aim to give them the best learning experience possible. I have thoroughly enjoyed the time I have spent here! The community of Thais and expats alike are a wonderful people. Everyone I have encountered has been super helpful with anything I have needed. This aside, the food is incredible, the culture is intriguing, and the location of Suratthani itself is ideal for popping over to some beautiful beaches and islands. There is a ton to see and do around Thailand, but if you're looking for more, it's also not too difficult to bounce to some other countries and enjoy some other cultures. I've dreamed about traveling across the world since I was a child, and I'm perfectly glad I chose Thailand as my first destination." – Christel Chappell
