Work-study volunteer

The International Humanity Foundation (IHF)

Job Description

Work-study volunteer

Become a Work-study volunteer in Nakuru, Kenya

The international Humanity Foundation is looking for bright, dynamic, charitable individuals of all ages, nationalities and background to assist us at our Kenya, Nakuru Children’s Centre.

Our centre is surrounded by fantastic views and even lovelier children. It is a perfect location as it is right in the heart of the rift valley as well as only being 2 hours away from Nairobi. With approximately 70 children, this is the biggest IHF centre, we provide every day care to extremely underprivileged children and orphans all from the very marginalised Pokot tribe, whose conditions are some of the worst in Kenya. We try and provide these children with a safe environment where they can grow up, retain their childhood and get education.

Your time at the centre will be divided between local tasks and international tasks, working a total of 8 hours a day with a day off a week.

Your local tasks would consist of but not limited to:

Organising children to work on the farm.

Accompanying children to spend special donations from their sponsors.

Organising special events such as sports (liaison with the centre coach), arts or educational events.

Running homework/study sessions in the evenings and weekends with the children in the study room.

Accompanying children to school to meet teachers/principals to address any issues.

Fundraising for the centre through family/friends/contacts in their home country.

Writing the weekly media blog

We try and accommodate the volunteer interests and passion so the work is not only rewarding but also enjoyable. Thus you can choose several things out of this list to support us with, but we are very flexible at the centre so if you want to try your hands at a couple of things, it is more than welcomed.

For your international tasks you will be assigned teams, made up of volunteers in all centres, and work on administrative tasks for not just the centre you are staying in, but the whole organisation. Areas assigned include Online Outreach, Media and Fundraising. This is a great opportunity to experience not only the hands on, in-field side of development, but also the overall management and running of an international organisation. If you are not interested in these tasks, contact us about our Voluntourist program. Some pre-trip tasks must be completed in order to gain an understanding of the kind of work you will be doing. At our centre we focus especially on fundraising both locally and internationally, online outreach to attract more volunteers to our centre and media being a focal point to publicise our centre internationally.

Requirements:

Fluent written and spoken English is required

Minimum stay is 4 weeks

Cost: $55 - $75 per week

Basic food and accommodation included

Cost decreases for longer stays

We are sure that it will be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life, we work hard to try and improve the children’s lives and in return we are rewarded with the ever smiling faces of the beautiful children.

This also offers you an ideal opportunity to gain development work at a grass root level with a charity that expects everyone to be hands on, work is always challenging and tough but it gives you a sense of satisfaction every day.
