The Volunteer’s Role

Based in a government department within the national government of Myanmar, you will support staff and government officials at the Department of Rural Development (DRD) and at the National Parliament to increase their English skills both through formal lessons and on the job support.

According to organizational needs and priorities, you will organize both private and group English lessons, with the objective of increasing the capacity for communication in joint projects between the government department and international partner organizations and ASEAN counterparts.

At times, these lessons will have to focus on certain vocabularies in order to ensure that staff are ready for topical meetings, but at other times it will be general grammar and vocabulary building.

You will likely be teaching on weekends for DRD and weekdays on the parliament. You will get two days off on weekdays.

As a volunteer, you will:

- Provide daily English as a Second Language (ESL) courses to the staff at the Department of Rural Development (DRD) as well as Union Parliament.

- Provide research, translation and on-the-job training including conversational English with MP women in Parliament and DRD staff.

- Guide and train local ESL Trainers in implementing curriculum, books, and sustainable guidelines that have been produced by previous volunteers.

- Continue the development of ESL curriculum for DRD staff and providing guidance for local staff.

Essential Academic Qualifications:

-Demonstrated competence in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) as noted by completion of an ESL trainers program

Essential Professional Background:

-Experience working with adult learners

-At least one year of previous ESL teaching experience

Support Package

- Cuso International assessment day (Candidates must cover the first $200 of the most cost-effective travel expenses and all accommodation costs).

- Travel and accommodation for the five-day pre-departure training course and for in-country orientation

- Bonus: Additional return flight home or cash in lieu after 12 months of service for volunteers who extend for another 6 months
