The Volunteer’s Role

As an Education Assistant, you’ll have the opportunity to have a positive impact on the educational outcomes of Indigenous students from grades four to twelve.

We’re looking for volunteers who can work directly with assigned teachers, participate in activities both inside and outside the classroom, and be engaged with the community through intercultural events throughout the school year.

Your experience as a volunteer in these remote communities will be enhanced by your involvement within the community.

Responsibilities:

-Tutor students primarily in Math, Science and English

-Assist with lessons under direct supervision of classroom teacher

-Monitor and report on the progress of students to classroom teachers

-Support students with special needs

-Accompany and supervise students during activities in the gym, laboratory, library, resource centre and on field trips

-Support fundraising events at the school and community level

-Provide help in other capacities where possible (including computer coaching, art, music, sports). These are dependant on your skills, experience, hobbies and the needs of the school

Candidates Must:

-Be able to pass a vulnerable sector police check.

-Possess a post-secondary level education.

Desirable Qualifications:

-Experience teaching or tutoring, particularly with special needs students.

-Trained in working with children and youth.

-Good interpersonal and communication skills are an asset, along with your energy and enthusiasm for the job!

Essential Background:

-Knowledge of Indigenous Peoples in Canada.

-Previous volunteer work experience either in Canada or in other countries.

-Experience working with Indigenous Peoples in Canada will be considered an asset.

A K-3 school located in Hay River that has a population of 160 students and is known for being welcoming and friendly. The teachers have a well-deserved reputation for excellence and maintain a positive and caring environment to help children learn.

This middle school has 160 students and is located in Hay River. The school is dedicated to the development of students and strives for children learn in a safe and caring environment that is culturally responsive. They prize excellence in student leadership and encourage student participation in a broad range of activities throughout the school year.

DIAMOND JENNESS SECONDARY SCHOOL - Hay River, NT

Also in Hay River, this school serves more than 235 students in Grades 8-12. They value and promote excellence in academic achievement, respect for Aboriginal culture, diversity in the population, service to the community, creativity in the arts, and individual and team competition in athletics.

Terms and Conditions

Cuso International terms and conditions allow you to lead a modest and healthy lifestyle while being effective in your placement. This support package will cover basic living expenses for the volunteer only and is not intended to cover home-based expenses (e.g., loans, support payments, etc.) or luxury items such as imported items in placement or international travel.

-Travel in Canada and accommodation during pre-departure training

The Volunteer is responsible for

- Visa application and any costs associated with obtaining your entry visa 
- Transportation to Ottawa (Canada) 
- Accommodation in Ottawa until pre-departure training 
- Vulnerable sector police check

Fundraising

We ask each Canadian volunteer, regardless of placement length, to raise $2,000. All volunteers receive support from Cuso International to help achieve the goal through fundraising. If the volunteer chooses not to fundraise or is unable to achieve the fundraising goal, he/she can make a one-time donation or become a monthly donor to support our work.
