Job Description

Full-time & Part-time Native English Speaking Teachers Needed in Barrancabermeja

WHAT WE NEED

Two English speaking, American or Canadian (born and raised)‘volunteer teachers’ every six months and four full-time preschool teachers for 2016. The part-time (5 month) ‘volunteer’ teachers are needed from February to June and July to November and it is an ongoing position. The 'volunteer teachers' are needed to teach English to our teachers, students (after school program) and parents in the community. The classes will be in the afternoon/evening. Retirees are welcome. This year, since the program is new and starting late in the school year, we only need volunteer teachers from now until the end of November.

THE FOUR FULL TIME POSITIONS - Pre-school teachers for ages 3-4 for 2016. February to November school year, contact Mr. Lawrence to discuss the offer.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU, THE VOLUNTEER

When you arrive in Colombia, a school representative will meet you at the airport in Bogota and will accompany you on the bus ride to Barrancabermeja. Once you come to Barrancabermeja, you will stay in a room provided by the school, free of charge. Lunch and a snack will be provided (free) Monday - Friday (workdays only). Attire while working is jeans/slacks and a nice shirt/blouse with a collar. No shorts, flip-flops, torn/ripped clothes, or T-shirts. In October, we will be taking a week off. During this week you can travel wherever you wish and you will receive your stipend for this week.

Unlike most volunteering opportunities, you do not have to pay to volunteer with us, we are going to give you a little for your services. We can offer you a stipend of 1.5 million Colombian Pesos. It is as much as many of our teachers make here in Barrancabermeja, however, in Canadian or US dollars, it is not much, but then the cost of living here is significantly different than in North America. For example, a breakfast close to the school of scrambled eggs, arepa and a cup of juice costs 4500 pesos. You are not going to save any money but you will not have to spend any of your own money either; as long as you live sensibly. Spanish is not required although a basic level of Spanish is highly recommended and teachers with a TEFL certification are desired.

THE RULES

Of course, since you will be working in a school, there are rules to be followed. No smoking on school grounds, or drinking before or during work, ever. Although this is a 'volunteer' opportunity, you are being offered a stipend and benefits; and as such, we expect you to perform the tasks we assign you with the same level of professionalism and dedication that you would give to any regular job in your chosen profession. Not showing up for work will not be tolerated. This is not a vacation with a free room to use as a base while you explore Colombia. It is a chance to immerse yourself in a culture, a community and to teach English to those who are less fortunate.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering and working in our school and community, and we look forward to speaking with you soon.

Sincerely,

Mr.Lawrence
