ESL Jobs in Malaysia Teach English in Malaysia
Malaysia provides a fantastic place to teach English, with a diverse landscape (beaches, islands, rainforests and cities), diverse mix of people (Malay, Chinese and Indian) and also being conviently located between popular destinations, Singapore and Thailand. While native English teachers are definetely needed in Malaysia, it is definetely not on the scale of Japan, Korea or China, and almost all paid jobs will be located in the cosmopolitan capital Kuala Lumpar. Positions on the other islands of Malaysia - Borneo and Sabah, are nearly all volunteer positions and there are many organisations catering to this market.
Most organisations will not hire from overseas, therefore teachers will need to think about arriving in Malaysia first, also you need to plan for around 1-2 months to find a position and have the appropraite funds to sustain you when you are looking for work.
Schools are not too strict on qualifications, a TESOL/TESL certification will suffice in some circumstances, but it would definetely be in your favour if you have higher qualifications or experience teaching English. The teaching load for English teachers in Malaysia is around 25 hours a week with a monthly salary anywhere from RM1,500 to 6000, although the average wage would be expected to be around RM4,000 to 5,000. Living expenses can be low depending on how you live, around RM1,000-1,500 per month.
