Teach English in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka, is an island nation in South Asia, located about 31 kilometers (18½ mi) off the southern coast of India. Originally known as Heladiva, it is home to more than twenty million people.

Famous for the production and export of tea, coffee, rubber and coconuts, Sri Lanka boasts a progressive and modern industrial economy. The natural beauty of Sri Lanka's tropical forests, beaches and landscape, as well as its rich cultural heritage make it a world famous tourist destination.

Sinhalese and Tamil are the two official languages of Sri Lanka. English is spoken by approximately 10% of the population, and is widely used for education, scientific and commercial purposes.

With the increased tourism trade in Sri Lanka, English is becoming much more important in Sri Lanka. English is in fairly strong demand and there are several private language institutes in the capital Colombo. While most places are filled by Indian and Sri Lankan teachers, there are still however some places for Native English speaking teachers, although conditions and pay is Sri Lanka is quite poor, so any teachers teaching there would need to have another reason.

The British Council has an office in Columbo which can help place teachers in it's classes, teaching English around Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka also has many positions teaching English as a volunteer, These positions teach in poorer rural, and also that were afftected by the tsunami a couple of years ago.
